Port Washington (2-3) (7-4) came up with a major upset as the Purple Riders beat off the offensive threats of the favored Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-2) (7-4) and finally copped an overtime decision over the Buccaneers. Coach Bray Toot's always-dangerous Riders jumped off to an early lead and were in command throughout the game until Coach Bob Wise's Pirates came up with a desperate rally and knotted the count at 60-60 in the last five seconds of regulation play. Port had held quarter leads of 17-9, 27-25, and 52-46. The riders took immediate charge in the overtime however, and Tom Jones tallied three points while Vernon Glazer and Ed Bates each caged two markers to decide the verdict. Led by Ed Bates with 19 points while Paul Frank caged 14 and Bob Welsch had 12, Port Washington held most of the Pirates in check except for Bill Pfister who was red hot as he caged 11 buckets and six fouls for 28 points, making seven of 10 attempts in the first half. It was the 8th straight victory for the Port Washington Reserves (10-1) as they blasted the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Reserves 42-27.
