Panthers Claw Purple Riders 55-42 (2-21-55)

Port Washington (15-8) started off fast against Stone Creek with Sophomore Ed Bates once again sparkling in the opening period. The Purple Riders galloped to a 12-5 lead midway in the canto, but were slowed down as Bill Jones and Ronnie Deibel began connecting for the Panthers. Port Washington held a 15-11 lead at the end of the first period, but faded badly in the second canto and the Panthers, unable to get their own attack in high gear, edged into the lead 22-21 shortly before the half ended. The Riders clung to their lead; however, as Paul Frank scored just before the intermission. The two teams battled at close quarters in the third canto with Deibel and Rod Reinhart giving the Panthers a slight edge and Dave Wherley sinking two fouls to send Stone Creek into a 36-33 lead at the far turn. From there on out it was Stone Creek's turn to "call the shots" and the Panthers held on to their slim lead until midway in the stanza when Jones began to connect and rocket his team into a commanding position. Stone Creek rushed to a 50-38 lead with only Tom Jones holding the Purple Riders up for the first six minutes of the final quarter. The Panthers put on the finishing touches and clinched the victory and the right to advance with a final burst. Jones and Deibel led the Panthers with 19 and 14 points, while Paul Frank was high for the Riders with 13. Ed Bates, who didn't score a field goal after the first quarter, had 12 and Tom Jones got 11 for Port.

Strasburg (19-2) unleashed a crushing offensive attack that knocked the Port Washington Purple Riders (15-7) back on their heels after a nip-and-tuck first quarter. Sophomore Ed Bates was the only reason for Port's first-period showing as he traded baskets with the entire Strasburg lineup. Ed Bates just couldn't miss as he tossed in five fielders to score 10 of the Riders' 11 markers while Jerry Froman, Strasburg's talented sophomore starter, connected for four goals in that opening canto. Strasburg's balance gave the Tigers a 16-11 lead at the close of the first quarter and they continued to roll along at a smooth pace with Jerry Von Kaenel and Jim Kuecher carrying the brunt of the load in the second quarter. The Bengals, missing very few opportunities to score, led 40-25 at the half time intermission. Strasburg's attack crackled with efficiency in the third period as the Bengals sizzled to a 54-25 lead in the first three and a half minutes. The Purple Riders, scoreless for the first part of the third stanza, counted only six points for the entire period, while the Tigers whipped in 28 markers and were far out in front 68-31 moving into the final quarter. Coach Ken Newlon's power-packed lineup stormed to a 79-33 lead in the first three minutes of the final period and then the reserves took over for both squads as the crowd lost interest and drifted out. Haswell scored 14, Kuecher 19, Von Kaenel 22 and Froman 16 in the Bengal balanced scoring while Ed Bates, who got only four markers in the second half, ended up with a total of 18 points to lead Port Washington.

Strasburg-Port Game Tops Tourney Slate (2-18-55)

Strasburg's County League champions will make their tournament debut tonight when they tangle with the up-and-coming Port Washington Purple Riders in the night-cap of a triple header in the 33rd annual county cage carnival. Two other games, both in the consolation bracket, will be staged on the Memorial Hall hardwood in the third night of the tourney. Dundee's Bulldogs take on the Bolivar Cardinals in the opening tussle at 6:30 with Baltic's Eagles moving back into action against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates at 7:45.
*
FIREWORKS EXPECTED
*
All three games are expected to produce plenty of fireworks with the Dundee-Bolivar and Baltic-Sugarcreek-Shanesville contests both renewing traditional rivalries while the Port Washington-Strasburg tussle pits two of the league's top teams against each other. Strasburg blasted Port Washington 88-53 in the Bengals' first game of the season, but the Riders have come a long way since that opening defeat and are now ranked as one of the "darkhorses" in the current tourney. The Riders earned the right to meet Strasburg in the quarter-finals contest by turning back Dundee 66-47 Tuesday night. Doors to Memorial Hall will open at 5:30. No seats are reserved for the games.

Right Down The Line (1-16-55)

LAST NIGHT'S tournament games at Memorial Hall failed to arouse any great stir with everything coming out along expected lines except for the Midvale-Sugarcreek-Shanesville game. The Blue Devils had beaten the Pirates 47-45 earlier in the season and while the flashily-clad Midvale team was still rated as the favorite, the 16-point spread was just a bit higher than expected. Could be that the Blue Devils have improved much more than the Pirates and, if this is the case, Midvale might be the team to watch in the tournament "darkhorse" role. Port Washington and Stone Creek won as expected last night and both will now be in the underdog classification in their next outing. The Panthers get their chance to knock off a "big one" when they meet Tusky tonight while the Purple Riders are pointing for Strasburg Friday night.
*
WE'VE BECOME so accustomed to high scorers of late that when a low-scoring ball player is classed as an outstanding performer, we know he must be a good playmaker, rebounder, floorman, etc. Yesterday we read where Larry Huston of Savennah has scored 939 points in 20 games for an average of 46.9 per game. Then Rex Leach of Vienna had totaled 855 for 19 games for a 45-point per-game average. Carter Howell of Flushing is averaging only 40.6 per game. Where is the defense? Or do all of these 6-5 skyscrapers simply outjump, outrun and outshoot their opponents?
*
THEN WE hear Frank Wade, Columbus East's 6-foot star, described as a "coach's dream". Part of the description of Wade has him as a "great playmaker, calm, wonderful general, terrific dribbler, great rebounder, sensational as a feeder and a good shot". The catch to all this is that Wade is averaging 12 points a game for 17 games. Where does that leave him? Must a player be a tremandous scorer to rank in class of "the best". Do coaches center their attack around a "big boy" and skim over teaching fundamental basketball to the team as a unit. You be the judge of that. Personally we think a good basketball player is just as likely to be found among the "giants". Shooting seems to be the thing these days though and Ohio State's Robin Freeman is a good example of that.
*
THEY SAY Freeman has practiced shooting 365 days a year for many years. That's why he is so accurate with his jump shot and why he's so hard to bottle upl. The average player takes at least eight or nine shots a game, if he's got the basic plrinciple of the game in mind. If he's anyway near average in his shooting, he'll come up with at least six points in field-goals and perhaps add a few on fouls. The rub here is that most players are lousy shots on the run and the way the game is played today, the shooter who can fire while going full speed ahead usually gets many more points than the guy who has to set and shoot. Playmakers and guys who get their share of the ploints mostly o determination and by taking advantage of the breaks are few and far between.

Bulldogs Lose Bite 66-47 (2-16-55)

Photo: CAGE CARNIVAL OPENS. The Tuscarawas County Class B tourney opened at Memorial Hall last night and settled down for a two week's stay. Daily Reporter Photographer Ralph McKee picked himself a perch and began recording action with his camera. Don Levengood of Dundee lets go with a jump shot as he moves past Port Washington's Gary Dichler at left while Ed Bates and Paul Frank of the Purple Riders get set under the basket for a possible rebound.
*
*
The Bulldogs (4-15)were hard to handle in the opening stanza and they matched Port Washington (15-6) point-for-point in that first eight minutes as the period ended in a 12-12 deadlock. Ed Bates, whose driving jump shot kept the Purple Riders in the saddle in the opening stanza, spurred Port Washington onto a rally in the second canto and Coach Bray Toot's charges gradually pulled away from the Pups to amass a 38-22 advantage at half time. Paul Frank and Tom Jones helped out in that period while they also came in for a little aid in the third stanza when both teams battled on almost even terms. Bob Baker and Don Levengood led Dundee's bid to get back into the contest, but Port held a 51-33 lead going into the stretch.
*
TEAMS BATTLE EVENLY
*
The two teams again battled evenly in the final canto, but the lapse in the second period cost Dundee and hopes it harbored for an upset victory. The Pups were cold from the field through most of the game except for a brief time in the second quarter when Baker potted four field goals to account for eight of Dundee's 10 points in that period. The little guard led Dundee's attack with 16 markers while Levengood had 15 and Gary Siemmer added 10. Ed Bates posted 20 for the Purple Riders while Tom Jones collected 19 and Paul Frank added 16. Port now meets Strasburg's undefeated league champions in the feature game on the Friday night card at 9 o'clock.

Class B Tourney Opens Tuesday (2-14-55)

*
A full slate of three games will open the 33rd annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball tourney at memorial Hall here Tuesday night with Strasburg, Midvale and Tuscarawas going into the meet as the top-favored teams while Port Washington, Stone Creek and Baltic are tagged as "darkhorses". The Tuscarawas Broncos, defending champions in the tourney, will not see action on the first night, but the Broncos will have an interest in the opening game since they are scheduled to meet the winner on Wednesday night.
*
PANTHERS MEET BOLIVAR
*
Stone Creek's Panthers and the Bolivar Cardinals will get the tourney started at 6:30, Tuesday night when they tangle for the second time this season. The Panthers defeated Bolivar 70-60 in that meeting, but were forced to hustle by an improving Bolivar club. Port Washington's Purple Riders, rated as the "hottest" team in the circuit during the 1955 portion of the campaign, will meet the Dundee Bulldogs in the second game on opening night. The Riders, who have won nine of 11 games in the 1955 campaign, defeated Dundee 63-44 in a regular-season game. Port's only two defeats since December 21st, when it lost to Stone Creek 71-70, were at the hands of Tuscarawas 76-55 and 55-54.
*
MIDVALE IN 3RD GAME
*
The third contest on tap Tuesday night has Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates colliding head on with the runnerup Midvale Blue Devils, another team which has been improving through the second half of the regular season. Midvale nicked the Pirates 47-45 in an early-season meeting, but the Blue Devils have won seven and lost only to Stone Creek and Strasburg in the 1955 part of the schedule while the Bucs have been on the skids, winning only three of nine. Dors to Memorial Hall will open at 5:30 Tuesday night with a capacity crowd explected to be on hand for the opening-night firing.

Strasburg, Tusky, Stone Creek Head Coaches' All-League Team (2-14-55)

Seven schools were represented on the 1955 coaches All-County League basketball team with Strasburg, Tuscarawas and Stone Creek each placing two men on the "dream team". A total of 29 players were nominated by the coaches of the 11 schools and the mentors then chose the ten top players with four others rating honorable mention. Jerry Von Kaenel and Jerry Haswell of Strasburg and Errol Jacobs of Baltic are repeaters from the 1954 All-Star selection made by the coaches. The two Strasburg players were both on the 1953 aggregation as well. Von Kaenel was the top vote-getter in the polling with Terry Deems of Tuscarawas, a lad who wasn't even mentioned last season, ranking second in the opinion of the coaches.
*
DEIBEL ONLY SOPHOMORE
*
Seven seniors, two juniors and a sophomore were named to the top ten by the professors of basketball with two seniors and two juniors included on the honorable mention list. Stone Creek's Ronnie Deibel, who broke into the starting lineup of the Panther varsity as a freshman, was the sophomore chosen to the group. The carrot-topped Stone Creek ace is the first sophomore honored to the team since both Haswell and Von Kaenel were named in 1953. Stone Creek also had Bill Jones on the honor squad. Jones, who was a standout as a freshman when he fired the Panthers to their only title in the 1952 County Tourney, has been mentioned each year since he was a frosh, but makes his first appearance in the All-League lineup.
*
DAVIS SMALLEST PLAYER
*
Named to the team from Tuscarawas along with Deems was the "half-pint" of the Bronco "Mutt and Jeff" combination. Dick Davis, who played his first season as a regular starter. Davis is the smallest member of the squad. Gnadenhutten's high-scoring guard Glen Hines and Mineral City's Pitchin' Paul Lindsey, both of whom have been peppering the nets with regularity all season, were the two juniors to break into the top ten. Rounding out the All-League choices was Paul Frank, Port Washington's veteran forward. Frank, one of the all-around top performers for the Purple Riders for the past three years, is labeled as one of the league's steadiest players.
*
HONORABLE MENTION
*
On the honorable mention list were Midvale's two driving guards. Bob Zontini and Larry Swinderman, senior and junior, respectively, along with Jim Kuecher, of Strasburg and Bob Baker of Dundee. The Midvale duo give the Blue Devile a dangerous offensive punch while Kuecher, a junior, has been tagged by many observers as a key player in the Strasburg success this past season. Baker, a mite-sized set-shot artist, was one of the key performers of the Dundee Bulldogs. An accident which resulted in the loss of part of a finger sidelined the Bulldog star for a brief interlude in the season and is said to have impaired his shooting ability during the latter part of the campaign. Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Baltic were the only two schools which were not represented on the team. Players were nominated by each coach and then all of the 11 mentors voted on the entire list.
*
TO RECEIVE TROPHIES
*
The ten players named to the All-League squad will each receive an individual trophy with his name and "All-League 1955" engraved on it. The trophies, presented by The Daily Reporter, which also donates the trophy for the tournament winner, will be given to the players when they are presented to the crowd on the night of the meet finals at Memorial Hall.

Tusky Nips Port; Pups Bow To Panthers (2-12-55)

Strasburg's Tigers reigned as undefeated Tuscarawas County Class B League champions for the third straight year after turning back a determined Midvale team 97-93 in a high-scoring donnybrook at Midvale last night. Both teams hit the basket with sharp precision in the contest, which was played before a packed house. The defeat was the second in league play for the Blue Devils, who saw a string of five straight victories snapped. Tuscarawas' Broncos put a temporary damper on the Port Washington Purple Riders 55-54 while Baltic upended Mineral City 95-57 to throw the third and fifth place spots into deadlocks as Stone Creek defeated Dundee 82-68. Last night's action was the final in loop play with the 33rd County tourney slated to open at Memorial Hall Tuesday night. The Bolivar and Gnadenhutten game was cancelled earlier yesterday because of poor weather conditions.

Deems Tallies Winning Points In 55-54 Win (2-12-55)

Fine defensive play by the Purple Riders (6-4) (14-6) held Tusky's big scoring ace, Terry Deems to 10 points the first 31 minutes of play, but the lanky veteran potted the winning points as he netted two free throws with one minute to go. Bill McConnell has the chance to tie the mark as he was awarded two charity tosses with 40 seconds to go, but could find the bucket on only one. Port pushed into a 14-12 lead at the first stop, but slipped to a 27-21 deficit at the intermission and were trailing 41-35 going into the final stanza. Port galloped back and tied the mark before the Broncos could score and in a see-saw battle in the remaining distance the score was even three more times before Deems cashed in the winning point. Dick Davis led Tusky (6-3) (12-5)with 25 points. Ed Bates, Tom Jones, and Gary Dichler each netted 14 points in the attack for Port. In the Reserve game Tuscarawas edged Port Washington (13-3) 37-35. It was one of the best seasons for the Port Washington Reserves in years.

Strasburg, Midvale Clash For County League Title (2-10-55)

Strasburg's Tigers, boasting the only unmarred County League record, will seek to wrap up their third straight undefeated circuit title when they invade the territory of the Midvale Blue Devils Friday night. The Strasburg-Midvale clash will highlight the County League's final round of action as the teams set their sights on tournament laurels in the 33rd annual carnival which takes place starting Tuesday in Memorial Hall here.
*
THE BENGALS, who have suffered non-league losses at the hands of West Lafayette 76-73 and Sandy Valley 68-57, defeated Midvale 73-53 in a none-league encounter earlier in the campaign. Midvale's circuit record is 8-1 with the lone defeat administered by Stone Creek's Panthers 82-62. The Blue Devils have a 14-5 overall record and have captured victories in their last five consecutive outings.
*
PORT WASHINGTON, claimant of a 6-3 league mark, will clash with Tuscarawas' Broncos who possess a 5-3 circuit record in the other top game in the final round. The Purple Riders have a 14-5 season's record while Tusky has an 11-5 overall mark. Baltic (14-5) is at Mineral City (4-14), Gnaden (10-11) is at Bolivar (3-15) and Dundee (4-14) will play at Stone Creek (13-7) in other league games. Sugarcreek-Shanesville (10-9) closes out the season at Berlin.

Right Down The Line (1-18-55) (2-10-55)

Glancing past the Midvale-Strasburg encounter Friday night, we can't help wondering what the annual Class B County Basketball meet holds in store for the fans this year. Each and every year one or more teams seem to rise up and smoke the Goliaths much in the manner of David in the Bible story. Last year the Port Washington Purple Riders took over the David role and almost kayoed Strasburg. In years gone by, Stone Creek, Bolivar and other teams have assumed the Cinderella role and brought down the favorites with a thundering crash. Who will it be this year?
*
THE DRAWINGS set up a most interesting situation in that most of the action will be centered in the top bracket. If the final league standings are followed, that is. Four top teams in Tuscarawas, Stone Creek, Port Washington and Strasburg are in the upper bracket and seem likely to fight it out among themselves with Dundee and Bolivar not expected to give much argument. Stone Creek had trouble subduing Bolivar recently and the Cardinals could prove to be pesky should the Panthers let down. Dundee, with Bobby Baker, Gary Siemmer and Don Levengood operating at top speed, could be a tough hurdle for the Port Washington Purple Riders despite the fact that Coach Bray Toot's charges are being tagged as a tourney "darkhorse" and the "hottest" team in the league at the present time. Should Stone Creek and Port Washington emerge victorious as expected, they will have to face Tuscarawas and Strasburg, respectively. There are many who are expecting to watch Tusky and Strasburg collide in the semi-finals and that may well be the case, but neither Port nor Stone Creek can be sold short yet.
*
IF STRASBURG and Tuscarawas meet again there is bound to be a "kettle of steam" generated with many fans already comparing Tuscarawas' near upset of Sandy Valley with the Strasburg defeat at the hands of the Cardinals. The Tigers upended Tuscarawas 68-58 in regular season play in a good contest and there is sure to be plenty of good competition again if and when the two teams collide. Strasburg will have much to repay since the Broncos defeated the 1953-54 Tigers in the county tournament and district finals last year to account for the only two defeats suffered by the Orange and Black.
*
IN THE LOWER bracket, Gnadenhutten, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Baltic are all given a good chance to upset the applecart and come through to trip Midvale. The Blue Devils; however, have been showing a steady improvement through the season and appear to be much stronger at present. At any rate, there'll be plenty of scrambling in both the upper and lower brackets of the tourney from the time the first game gets underway between Stone Creek and Bolivar at 6:30PM Tuesday. In the meantime, the battle at Midvale is shaping up as a crucial one for both teams. Strasburg will be out to bounce back hard while Midvale will be seeking to avenge the early-season pasting suffered at Strasburg. The regular-season preliminaries are just winding up and the annual donnybrooks are yet to be staged. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Coach Bray Toot's Purple Riders (6-3) (14-5) finished with an all-senior team on the floor, some of whom have not seen much action, as they rolled to their easy win over Mineral City (0-9) (4-13). The first-string Riders launched the tilt without the services of Bill McConnell, ill with the flu, but raced to 19-12 and 38-24 leads at the first two rest stops. Port was in front 53-26 after Mineral hit a low point in the third period and the senior aggregation started the final frame. Paul Frank hit 20 points for the winners while Ed Bates had 17 and Paul Lindsey had 28 for Mineral City.

County Teams Shoot For Positons In Tourney Draw (2-3-55)

With the drawings for the annual County Class B Tournament slated Monday, the County League action is expected to produce fireworks Friday night as all except Dundee are slated to compete in the scramble. Strasburg's Tigers, undefeated in eight hoop games to date, will seek to maintain their lofty perch when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates invade.
*
THE TIGERS will be interested in the outcome of the Midvale invasion of Gnadenhutten, since the Blue Devils, with a 7-1 league record, are still in a position to challenge for the league title. Mineral City will be at Port Washington and Bolivar is slated at Stone Creek in other action with the Tuscarawas at Baltic contest also expected to hold part of the spotlight. Only the Midvale-Gnadenhutten and Strasburg-Sugarcreek-Shanesville contests will have any bearing on the title race. The Pirates will bow out of league competition with its circuit schedule complete in the tiff with Strasburg.
*
TUSCARAWAS and Baltic, who share 5-3 league marks with the fast-improving Port Washington Purple Riders, will be seeking to move up into third place in Friday's outings. Dundee is slated to see action Saturday night when the Bulldogs host Walnut Creek.

Strasburg, Tuscarawas Roll To Loop Triumphs (1-29-55)

The Gremlings were working overtime last night as three upsets were recorded in the Tuscarawas County Class B League with only Strasburg and Tuscarawas escaping the mischievous touch of the jinx. Strasburg's Bengals powered their way over Stone Creek 83-61 and Tuscarawas defeated Dundee 63-44 while Bolivar, Port Washington and Gnadenhutten came in with triumphs in other games. Bolivar's Cardinals edged past Mineral City's Tigers and out of the league cellar 70-66, Port Washington waxed red hot to defeat Baltic 61-50 and the Gnadenhutten Indians scalped Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates 50-47. Midvale was idle in league play last night and held onto second place.

Purple Riders Stage 'Red-Hot' Shooting Show 61-50 (1-29-55)

Port Washington's Purple Riders (5-3) (12-5) jumped back into the role of the "hottest" team in the league by taking an early lead and defeating the Eagles in their own backyard. Wily Coach Bray Toot elected to play a control-type game and the Purple Riders, who brought along their "shooting clothes," hit a red-hot 49.2 from the field and connected from 21 of 25 free throw attempts to hand Baltic its third league defeat. Port Washington just couldn't miss with Paul Frank leading the way. The veteran senior forward collected 27 points on seven field goals and 13 free throws in 14 attempts. The Purple Riders led 16-12 at the end of the first period and were still out in front 29-21 at the half time as they controlled the tempo of the contest. Baltic managed to draw within two points in the third period, but the Riders galloped away once again and were on top 44-32 heading into the stretch. Baltic could not hit well from the field and made only eight of 18 foul chances to lose the contest at the free-throw stripe. Errol Jacobs and Jim Wallace were high for the Eagles with 13 and 14 points, respectively. The Port Washington Reserves (13-2) won another game by topping Baltic 39-19.

Tusky Halts Port Win Skein After 7 In A Row 76-55 (1-26-55)

The Tuscarawas Broncos (4-3) (9-5), defending District Class B Champions, snapped a seven-game victory skein compiled by Port Washington (4-3) (11-5) as they romped to a 76-55 triumph over the Purple Riders last night. The Broncos of Coach George Trombitas were never headed after grabbing a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play and were in command throughout the contest, posting a half time advantage of 30-24 and increasing the margin to 53-41 at the last rest stop. Although he was held to only eight points the first half by the guarding of Tom Jones, lanky Terry Deems emerged as the top pointmaker for the Broncos with 13 baskets and three fouls for 29 points. Dick Davis added 16 to the winning effort. Tom Jones tallied 15 for the Purple Riders while Paul Frank, despite the fact that he missed all eight free throws awarded him, was high for the losers with 16 points. The Port Washington Reserves (12-2) edged the Tuscarawas Reserves 43-40.

Right Down The Line (1-18-55)

LINERS...That No. 8 is getting good treatment on the Port Washington baskeball team. The jersey with No. 8 on it is what we refer to in this case, Chuck Linard, a high-scoring Port cager a few years back did alright by that number and then a cousin of his, Ken Huston, took over and kept up the tradition. Sophomore Ed Bates is the current wearer of the jersey with No. 8 on the back and he's keeping the high-scoring tradition going. Watch Ed Bates in the future... West Lafayette, the team that upset Strasburg here recently, avenged one of its two defeats last Friday night by clipping Union 97-85. Jerry Legge of the Generals whipped in 43 points in that game.

Port Washington's Purple Riders (4-3) (11-4) continued galloping along at a fast clip as they racked up their seventh straight victory and 11th of the season last night by defeating the Dundee Bulldogs (2-6) (2-11). Bob Baker returned to the lineup for the Bulldogs, but the set-shot artist was hampered by his hand and was not at his full effectivenesss. Coach Bray Toot's Purple Riders posted quarter leads of 16-2, 24-15 and 46-19 as they were chalking up the victory with four cagers hitting for double figures. Paul Frank led the Purple Riders scoring with 22 points while Don Levengood was high for the Bulldogs with 21 markers. The Port Washington (11-2) Reserve game either was not played or not reported.

Pirate Rally Falls Short 55-52 (1-20-55)

The Port, Sugarcreek-Shanesville game was more of a control type tilt with both teams operating against a tight zone defense. The Purple Riders (3-3) (10-4)went through the first six minutes of the game without being able to score and fell behind 6-0. Coach Bray Toot's charges, led by Ed Bates, soon galloped back into contention however, and they rushed to a 17-9 first-period lead. Ed Bates connected four field goals in the first period and added two more in the second with some help from Bob Welsch while Al Craigo kept the Pirates from spinning out. Port held a 27-15 lead at half time. Paul Frank for the Purple Riders and Bill Pfister for Coach Bob Wise's Pirates (5-2) (9-5) staged a scoring duel in the third period with Bill Pfister's driving play helping Sugarcreek-Shanesville cut the margin to 10 points at the far turn, 48-38, as he tallied 11 of the Pirates' 13 points in the third stanza. Keith Gerber, Al Craigo, and Ted Brown joined in the Sugarcreek-Shanesville barrage in the fourth period as the Pirates threatened to overtake Port, but the Riders held on through the final minutes to win the tilt. Ed Bates had 18 and Paul Frank 13 for Port Washington, while Bill Pfister collected 17, Al Craigo 12, Keith Gerber 11 and Ted Brown 10 for the Pirates.

Polio Benefit Doubleheader On Wednesday (1-18-55)

The state was all set today for the special basketball doubleheader slated for Wednesday night at Dover Memorial Hall for the benefit of the Tuscarawas County March of Dimes. It will be "Southern" Tuscarawas County against the "Western" sector as the Port Washington Purple Riders meet the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates in the 7:30PM curtain-raiser and the Gnadenhutten Indians collide with the Baltic Eagles in the 8:45 nightcap. Doors to the gym will open at 6:30PM and a 50 cent contribution will be asked of each fan, adult or student. All proceeds will go into the Infantile Paralysis Benefit Fund of the county.
*
THREE OF the four teams involved have identical records, Port Washington, Sugarcreek-Shanesville, and Baltic each winning nine of thirteen games. Gnadenhutten has a record of nine victories and six losses. Each of the games are return engagements otherwise not called for on the regular schedules. Sugarcreek-Shanesville dropped a 67-64 overtime tussle at Port Washington while Baltic edged the Indians 59-52 in previous encounters. The ball which will be used in the games is being furnished by New Philadelphia High School and assistant Coach Bob Heller of Dover High School will be the official timekeeper.
*
DOVER police have volunteered their services for the games and Atty. Joe Streb, county chairman for the March of Dimes, is furnishing the Ticket sellers and takers. Jim Morgan and Ken Mathias of New Philadelphia and Ed Smith of Strasburg and Allan Veigel of Dennison have volunteered to officiate the games. An added attraction on the program will be an exhibition by the fencing class of the Y.M.C.A. which is instructed by Dick Shonk of New Philadelphia. The exhibition is slated for the half time of the Port Washington, Sugarcreek-Shanesville game.

Right Down The Line (1-18-55)

We hope the Dover City Fathers were looking in Saturday night at Memorial Hall. The twin bill staged by Strasburg High School was really a success as far as the attendance was concerned. There aren't any figures on which to base this supposition, but we talked with several people who stayed away thinking that there wouldn't be enough room. That's the same old story. The place was filled. Wednesday night's March of dimes benefit should attract a good crowd despite the fact that there aren't any unbeaten teams in the lineup. We're sure the fans in the five villages represented will be there plus a few more who like to watch basketball. Baltic and Gnadenhutten staged a thriller earlier in the season and Port Washington nipped Sugarcreek-Shanesville in an overtime. The rematch of these teams should bring more close competition.
*
THE CITY Council's decision to remodel Memorial Hall should get a boost after Saturday night's successful venture. There are some who want to build a fieldhouse under school auspices, but let's face it, that is a near impossibility at the moment. There are still two grade schools to be paid for and a new grade school to take care of the Sixth Street pupils will be a must in the very near future with the high school students expected to branch out into the wing now used as a grade school. Memorial Hall is the only answer to the problem and Dover has a chance to get in first with a suitable building for basketball and many other activities.
*
IF HISTORY repeats itself, and they say it does, Strasburg could well be on the way to another great basketball season despite the Saturday night upset. In three of the last five years, Strasburg teams have gone at least as far as the District Class B finals. One year they went all the way to the Regional finals before losing out. And if memory serves us correctly, in all of those years the Tigers moved ahead in the tournament picture despite an upset defeat somewhere along the line in the county tournament.
*
IN 1950 it was Bolivar who upset the Tigers. Strasburg went on to win the consolation and upset an undefeated Scio team in the District before losing to Yorkville in the finals. In 1953 it was Stone Creek who turned the tables. The Tigers came back to once again defeat a strong Scio team and go on to the Regionals after upending a highly-touted Northwestern ball club. In 1954, Tuscarawas upset Strasburg in the finals of the county meet and then did it again in the District finals after both teams plowed through the sectional and preliminary District tourney tilts.
*
WHAT IS significant about all of those upset defeats? They all occurred on the Memorial Hall hardwood. In each of those three seasons, Strasburg went on to tournament successes after the Tiger suffer an upset lacing on the Memorial Hall court. Saturday night, West Lafayette pulled the upset over Strasburg on the Memorial Hall floor. The season is little more than half over with eight more games on the Tiger slate. Strasburg should come back strong in this last half and history, which has already repeated partly, may complete the job.

Port Riders Scalp Gnaden Indians 76-64 (1-15-55)

Coach Bray Toot's Purple Riders (3-3) (9-4) gained revenge for an earlier 59-44 non-league loss as they posted their impressive triumph over the neighboring Gnadenhutten Indians (2-4) (9-6). The Tribe trailed most of the game, but with Glen Hines hitting the bullseye from all angles, were in contention until the final stages of the battle. A double-barreled attack furnished by Paul Frank and Tom Jones counteracted the exploits of Hines and gave the Riders their fifth straight victory and an even 3-3 league record. Hines couldn't seem to miss as he burned the nets for 39 points on 14 baskets and 11 fouls, but Paul Frank came through with 29 points and Tom Jones added 24 for Port Washington. The Indians of Coach Dick Scott trailed at each of the rest stops, being on the short end of 24-18, 40-39, and 60-54. Sugar-Shanes In Benefit Tilt For Mineral (1-14-55)

Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates have replaced the Mineral City Tigers as one of the four teams on the special March of Dimes basketball doubleheader at Memorial Hall on Wednesday night, January 19, it was announced today. A check of rules and regulations for the current cage search disclosed that OHSAA rules prohibit member schools from playing two games prior to a school day in any one week. Mineral City meets Dundee on Tuesday, January 18, for a non-league game and cannot therefore play in the benefit. The return meeting between Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Port Washington, slated for the 7:30PM curtain-raiser, should be a "natural" inasmuch as the Purple Riders of Coach Bray Toot just copped a thrilling 67-64 overtime victory over the Pirates last Friday in a league game at Port Washington. In the benefit doubleheader nightcap, the Baltic Eagles will also be meeting a previous foe when they collide with the Gnadenhutten Indians at 8:45PM. In the earlier clash, the Eagles nipped the Tribe by a 59-52 count. Adminission to the games will be in the form of a 50-cent contribution with all proceeds being turned over to the Tuscarawas County March of Dimes.

Stone Creek Hosts Midvale (1-13-55)

Stone Creek's Panthers, who have clawed their way to an impressive seven victories in the last nine starts after dropping their first three outings in succession, will get a chance to step into the role of spoilers in Tuscarawas County Class B League action Friday night. The Panthers host Midvale's Blue Devils, who share the league lead with Strasburg. Midvale and Strasburg each have five league wins without a defeat and the Devils will get a chance to claim undisputed possession of first place while Strasburg is idle until Saturday night. Stone Creek, outclassed only by Baltic 83-65 in its five defeats, will have a big edge over Midvale because of the site of the game and the Panthers are given an even chance of upending the Blue Devils perfect league slate. Other circuit contests on tap Friday night have Baltic at Dundee, Sugarcreek-Shanesville at Bolivar, Gnadenhutten at Port Washington and Tuscarawas at Mineral City.

In Polio Benefit Doubleheader (1-11-55)

Four Tuscarawas County Class B League basketball teams have agreed to participate in a special doubleheader at Dover's Memorial Hall to benefit the county's current March of Dimes drive, it was announced today. The event is slated for Wednesday, January 19, and will pit Baltic's Eagles against Gnadenhutten's Indians and the Port Washington Purple Riders against the Mineral City Tigers.
*
NO SET admission fee will be charged. Each person attending is asked to make at least a 50 cent contribution. This, in keeping with the March of Dimes slogan, will represent one dime for each player on the team which the fan is boosting. There will be no restrictions on contributing additional dimes for the substitutes, coaches and managers, and cheerleaders. The city of Dover had donated the use of Memorial Hall for the benefit and Dover High School will provide the clocks and scoreboards. Mineral City and Port Washington, originally not scheduled to play until February 4 at Mineral City, will collide in the curtain-raiser at 7:30PM while Gnadenhutten and Baltic meet at 8:45. The Indians and Eagles have met once before with Baltic winning 59-52.
*
KEN MATHIAS of New Philadelphia and Allan Veigel of Dennison will officiate the Mineral City-Port Washington game while Jim Morgan of New Philadelphia and Ed Smith of Strasburg will handle the Gnadenhutten-Baltic fray. All have donated their services. The concession stand located in the basement of the hall will be operated by the student council of Dover High School and part of the proceeds from that activity will also be turned over to the March of Dimes. Ticket sellers and takers will be provided by Atty. Joe Streb, the chairman of the county March of Dimes.
