59 - Midvale Captures Win Over Port Quint 61-51 (12-31-58)

PORT WASHINGTON - Despite a second half rally in a husting young Port Washington (2-8) aggregation, the Midvale Blue Devils (9-1) proved too much for the hosts Tuesday night as the invaders chalked up another victory. Midvale sprinting to a 21-9 first quarter lead and then medthodically moving on to succeeding 35-19 and 41-34 leads, had to put on the gas in the final quarter to register the win. Thus, Port's two-game winning streak, coming after seven straight losses, came to an end as the quintet of Coach Tom Davies loss their eighth of the season. Coach Pete Hillard's defending county champions had little trouble in the first half, and after moving to the 16 point lead at the long intermission, put his second five on the floor. But, the Purple Riders found new lite and moved to within seven points of the Devils during the third stanza. The bigger Devils again proved their class with the first stringers coming back to save the victory. Port's top scorer, Bill Phillips, was forced to take the back seat in the scoring last night as Dave Belknap did a fine defensive job on the pint-sized sharpshooter, holding him to only five points. John Landon took the Port laurels with 21 points, while Larry Hagan chimed in with 12. Ron Breniser led a balanced scoring attack for Midvale as he hit 17, followed by Hill Housel with 11 and Belknap with 10. Nine men were in the scoring column. Tom Krocker, back in the Midvale lineup for the last time last week, did not dress for last night's encounter. The Blue Devils, although winning the contest, failed to show too much accuracy at the foul line as they connected on only 15 of 40 charity tosses. Port made 13 of 24. Midvale Reserves (6-4) was a 10-point winner over the Port Washington Reserves (2-8) 41-31.
