For the first time in recent weeks there's a stiff challenge being put forth for the Tuscarawas County Class "A" individual scoring leadership held throughout most of the season by Gnadenhutten's Ron Bradley. Bradley still holds sway with 345 points, but a 67-point outburst for Baltic's John Rice in two games last week bolsted his season aggregate to a hefty 317. It's the closest anyone has been to the Gnaden scoring ace since early in December when Rice was only 9 points off the leading pace. Both Rice, a 5-11 veteran who has another year of action left for Baltic, and Bradley have five games left to play. Unless there's a quick surge by some other performer, it now appears as though the race is up to them. Bradley has his 345 points in 12 games for a 26.5 game average, while Rice, who has missed one of 15 Baltic games to date, carries a 22.6 average. Rice must better his average if he hopes to overtake Bradley. Baltic's Gary Gerber is third with 271 points, while Midvale's Ron Breniser is fourth with 263. Five performers reached the 200 mark in games last week. Bill Phillips of Port Washington soared to 242, Ben Price of Tuscarawas Valley to 232, Charley Stingel and Larry Yakley of Garaway to respective 223 and 217 totals, and Harold Lahmers of Stone Creek to 201. Frank Wallick of Strasburg is just shy with 198.
