Garaway (13-8) gave a repeat performance of its regular-season victory over Port Washington (3-17). The Pirates simply ran away. The Pirates rolled up an 86-42 count December 5 over the Purple Riders. Under the first-year tutorship of Tom Davies the Riders matched buckets with the Pirates during the opening moments, but Garaway then hit for 11 straight points before Port Washington connected from the foul line. Garaway went on to a 24-14 first-quarter lead and then held 45-26 and 61-38 margins at the succeeding stops. Port Washington could not match the Pirate height, shooting ability and team balance. Four of Coach Jim Stull's chargers ended in double figures with Butch Yakley leading the way with 19 points. All-Countian Charley Stingel added 18, Koran Zehnder had 15 and Tom Andreas 13. John Landon meshed 14 and Bill Phillips, who made the Daily Reporter's recent All-County squad as a Sophomore, ended with 10 for the Riders. Garaway took 86 shots from the field, but converted 37 for 42 percent. The Riders were almost as accurate with a 37.7 mark. However, they attempted only 61, making 23. Garaway hit 13 of 24 from the foul line and Port 5 of 11.
