There's nothing like a close basketball game to stop the hearts of faithful followers. Tusky Valley (19-1) and Garaway (13-10) did just that for their hometown supporters last night. The outcome was doubtful from the beginning and wasn't decided until the Trojans' Clarence Cantrill canned two free throws with 15 seconds left to put his team ahead by four points. During the course of the seesaw contest, the score was tied nine times. On occasion, both teams were guilty of miscues, but they served only to make the game closer and more exciting. Tusky Valley grabbed the first lead of the game when it went ahead 3-0, but the Pirates struck back to tie the score on a free throw by Koran Zehnder and a jump shot by Tom Andreas. The count was deadlocked five more times before Charles Stingel connected from the side to put the Pirates on top 15-13 at the end of the first period. Garaway resorted to a cool ball control game in the second quarter, working for easy shots and by doing so boosted its lead. It was in the driver's seat 25-20 at halftime. But the Trojans were fired higher than a space satellite as the third period opened. They tied the game at 26-26 at 6:20 and seconds later went ahead by one point when Ron Lake flipped in a free throw. The lead changed hands three more times before the Trojans went ahead 35-33 at end of the Stanza. At 5:40 of the final chapter, they went on top for keeps at 41-40. With two minutes to play they were ahead by nine points before Garaway struck back for a last-ditch drive. Andreas connected twice and Larry Yakley once to narrow the count to three points. Lake countered once from the foul line for the winners, before Yakley hit on another jumper. And then Cantrill was fouled and the Trojan Senior veteran calmly stepped to the line to mesh both on the one-and-one.

Yakley was the big man in the Garaway attack. The 5-6 guard ended with 24 points, the high mark of the night. Koran Zehnder tallied 12 and Andreas 10 to round out the losing bid. Ben Price led the way for the Trojans with 19, while Cantrill and Roy Buchanan ended with 12 apiece. The Pirates had the better of the shooting when they were successful in 20 of 56 tries for 35.7 percent. However, Tusky Valley took 72 shots, making 22 for 30.5.
