Six teams will take steps down the long and always rough tournament trail tonight when the 37th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" County meet gets under way at Memorial Hall. The only triple-header of the tournament is slated and when it's all over, there'll be three less quintets on "heart-break path". The county affair was a double-elimination event until two years ago, but with the consolidation of Mineral City and Bolivar into Tuscarawas Valley and Dundee and Sugarcreek into Garaway, the meet was cut down to nine teams and it was turned into a single-elimination event. Tonight's opener sees Stone Creek (12-8) battling Strasburg (6-12) at 6:30, while games between Midvale (16-1) and Baltic (10-10) and Tuscarawas Valley (17-1) and Tuscarawas (6-11) will follow at 7:45 and 9, respectively. Tuscarawas Valley is the only clear-cut favorite come out with a victory in initial tourney play. In regular season play, the Trojans romped past the Broncos 69-39. Midvale, seeking its second straight championship, had a rought time with Baltic in regular play and had to settle for a 73-71 verdict. The Strasburg-Stone Creek game is another tossup. The Tigers edged the Panthers 42-39 in regular league warfare. Tourney action will resume Thursday night with Gnadenhutten (12-5) battling the winner of the Stone Creek-Strasburg game in the curtain raiser at 7:30, while Garaway (12-8) and Port Washington (3-16) get into initial tourney action at 8:45. This week's victors will then rest until Friday night, February 20, when semi-final action is scheduled. Tournament finals are Saturday, February 21, with both the champion and runner-up moving into section warfare.
