Midvale (18-1) started out with intentions of sending the Indians back to the wigwam with their tomahawks hanging mightly low and it didn't waver from its goal. The tourney-hardened Devils were primed for their third meeting with Gnaden (14-7) and before the large turnout had barely settled themselves for the action at hand, had raced to a 12-3 lead. They closed the initial stanza with a 20-8 lead. Controlling both backboards, Midvale was ahead 24-8 early in the second period before the Tribe started to regain its senses and launch a war party of its own. With pint-sized Ron Clark and ace scorer Ron Bradley leading the way, the Indians started chipping away. At intermission, they had narrowed the count to 36-30. While it maintained momentum until the latter minutes of the final stanza, Gnadenhutten didn't have the speed to go all the way. In the third period, it closed the gap to three points on six occasions. The Indians were behind by six points when they tallied their last basket of the game with 4:05 remaining. Midvale just waltzed to the win from that point.
*
Midvale meshed 29 of 78 shots from the field for 37.2 percent, while Gnaden made 23 of 68 for 32.4. The Devils' balance showed up again with three scorers ending in double figures. Hanes Hairston copped point honors with 19, while Bill Housel added 17 and Tom Krocker 14. Bradley, who had averaged over 25 points a game in regular action, was limited to 16. Clark added 11 and Gary Rank followed with 10.

59 - Trojans Take 57-54 Margin Over Garaway (2-21-59)

Others are Ben Price (10), Clarence Cantrill (11), Roy Buchanan (12) and Ron Lake, far right, for the Trojans and Tom Andreas (30) of the Pirates.

There's nothing like a close basketball game to stop the hearts of faithful followers. Tusky Valley (19-1) and Garaway (13-10) did just that for their hometown supporters last night. The outcome was doubtful from the beginning and wasn't decided until the Trojans' Clarence Cantrill canned two free throws with 15 seconds left to put his team ahead by four points. During the course of the seesaw contest, the score was tied nine times. On occasion, both teams were guilty of miscues, but they served only to make the game closer and more exciting. Tusky Valley grabbed the first lead of the game when it went ahead 3-0, but the Pirates struck back to tie the score on a free throw by Koran Zehnder and a jump shot by Tom Andreas. The count was deadlocked five more times before Charles Stingel connected from the side to put the Pirates on top 15-13 at the end of the first period. Garaway resorted to a cool ball control game in the second quarter, working for easy shots and by doing so boosted its lead. It was in the driver's seat 25-20 at halftime. But the Trojans were fired higher than a space satellite as the third period opened. They tied the game at 26-26 at 6:20 and seconds later went ahead by one point when Ron Lake flipped in a free throw. The lead changed hands three more times before the Trojans went ahead 35-33 at end of the Stanza. At 5:40 of the final chapter, they went on top for keeps at 41-40. With two minutes to play they were ahead by nine points before Garaway struck back for a last-ditch drive. Andreas connected twice and Larry Yakley once to narrow the count to three points. Lake countered once from the foul line for the winners, before Yakley hit on another jumper. And then Cantrill was fouled and the Trojan Senior veteran calmly stepped to the line to mesh both on the one-and-one.
*
Yakley was the big man in the Garaway attack. The 5-6 guard ended with 24 points, the high mark of the night. Koran Zehnder tallied 12 and Andreas 10 to round out the losing bid. Ben Price led the way for the Trojans with 19, while Cantrill and Roy Buchanan ended with 12 apiece. The Pirates had the better of the shooting when they were successful in 20 of 56 tries for 35.7 percent. However, Tusky Valley took 72 shots, making 22 for 30.5.

59 - Midvale And Tusky Valley Gain Sectional (2-21-59)

Defending champion Midvale (18-1) and Tuscarawas Valley (19-1) are paired for tonight's final of the 37th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Basketball Tournament in Memorial Hall. They'll clash at 8. The county's two best-record quintets emerged victorious from last night's thrilling semi-final doubleheader with Midvale whipping Gnadenhutten 69-52 and Tuscarawas Valley nipping Garaway 57-54 before another screaming crowd. Regardless of the outcome of tonight's championship encounter, both have qualified for the Class "A" Sectional Tournament scheduled here next week. Last night's wins did the trick. Tonight's meeting will be the second between the two rivals. They met on the Midvale court January 9 and the Blue Devils rolled to an 81-56 decision. It was the only blotch on the Tuscarawas Valley record and knocked the Trojans out of a chance for the league crown. Midvale took its second straight league championship with an 8-0 record and Tusky Valley finished league play with a 7-1 record.
*
Tusky Valley and Garaway (13-9) staged a repeat performance of two regular season meetings last night. The Trojans of Coach Bob Heller won both of the games, but by identical 3-point margins, 55-52 and 45-42. The win also provided the Trojans a measure of revenge against Garaway. The Pirates topped Tusky Valley 48-34 in the county tournament opening round a year ago. It was Tusky Valley's 10th straight victory since losing to Midvale. Midvale and Gnadenhutten (14-6) had split in regular-season warfare, but the Devils were clearly the better team last night. A 78-76 loss to the Indians December 16 is the only mar on an otherwise perfect Devil record. They've won 12 in a row since, including a 70-63 margin over Gnadenhutten January 16.
*
Pairings for the sectional tournament, to be played next Tuesday, Friday and Saturday night, will be held at 5:30PM, Sunday at Helmkamp's Restaurant. Already qualified, in addition to Midvale and Tusky Valley, are Hiland and Killbuck from Holmes County and Dennison St. Mary's. The Carroll County representative will be decided when Augusta and Malvern meet tonight.

59 - Overflow Crowd Is Expected (2-20-59)

An overflow crowd is expected tonight for the semi-finals of the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall. Providing all the excitement will be the top four finishers in regular Class "A" League action this season. Champion Midvale (17-1), their ninth since 1936, will clash with third-place Gnadenhutten (14-6) in the opener at 7, while second-place Tusky Valley (18-1) battles fourth-place Garaway (13-8) in the windup of the big program at 8:45. And on the basis of past performances the two contests must be considered tossups. During regular play Midvale spilt with Gnadenhutten, losing on its floor 78-76, while topping the Tribe 70-63 on the Indians' home court. Tusky Valley downed Garaway twice during the season, but the two victories were only by a total six-point margin. The Trojans took the first 45-42 and the second 55-52. Out of the two games will come Tuscarawas County's two representatives to the sectional tournament at Memorial Hall next week. Tomorrow night's action will pit the two winners in the finale of the 37th annual meet. Game time is 8.

59 - Outstanding Twin Bill Set In Tusky Semis (2-19-59)

Four Tuscarawas County Class "A" cage combines will lock horns tonight in Memorial Hall in one of the most outstanding semi-final doubleheaders in recent history of county tournament warfare. Defending champion Midvale (17-1) and runner-up Gnadenhutten (14-6) will open the program at 7:30, while Tuscarawas Valley (18-1) and Garaway (13-8) collide in the 8:45 nightcap. Three of the teams - Midvale, Gnadenhutten and Tuscarawas Valley were semi-finalists last season. Gnadenhutten has hooked up with Midvale to provide one of the most heated rivairies in county basketball warfare. Last year, the Indians finished second to the Devils in county league action and then lost 67-60 in the tournament finals. However, in the opening game of the sectional meet, the Indians turned the tables on Coach Pete Hilliard's charges to capture an 80-67 victory. Gnaden invaded Midvale December 16 this season and came away with a 78-76 victory. But one month later, January 16, the Devils decided turnabout was fair play and decisioned the Tribe 70-63 on their home court. Thus tomorrow night's contest will be the first meeting this season of the two teams on a neutral floor. The rivalry between Tuscarawas Valley and Garaway has been just as intense. Coach Bob Heller's Trojans hold a four-game regular-season streak over the Pirates, having won two decisions in each of the last two seasons. This season's two contests wer decided by a total of six points. Tusky Valley won 45-42 and 55-52. The Trojans also will be out to avenge a 43-34 loss to Garaway suffered in the league tourney's opening round last season. Gnadenhutten will be led by their prolific scoring ace, Ron Bradley, who has totaled 518 points, including one tourney fray. Pint-sized Ron Clark, 5-5 guard, follows him with 244. The Blue Devils carry one of the best balanced attacks ever exhibited by a county team into the fray. They have four players who have scored over 200 points, while the fifth, Tom Krocker, has tallied 145 in 9 contests. Leading the way is Ron Breniser with 371 points, while Tom Belknap follows with 225, Bill Housel 212 and Hanes Hairston 205. Garaway has a three-pronged attack while Tusky Valley has depended on two players for the majority of its points. Charley Stingel and Larry Yakley have meshed 326 and 321 points, respectively, while Koran Zehnder has added 255 for the Pirates. Ben Price is high for the Trojans with 400 and Roy Buchanan follows with 251. The two winners, who will collide in the finals Saturday night at 8, automatically qualify for next week's sectional tournament here. The playoff contest is a mere formality.

59 - Garaway Dumps Port Washington 87-49 (2-13-59)

Garaway (13-8) gave a repeat performance of its regular-season victory over Port Washington (3-17). The Pirates simply ran away. The Pirates rolled up an 86-42 count December 5 over the Purple Riders. Under the first-year tutorship of Tom Davies the Riders matched buckets with the Pirates during the opening moments, but Garaway then hit for 11 straight points before Port Washington connected from the foul line. Garaway went on to a 24-14 first-quarter lead and then held 45-26 and 61-38 margins at the succeeding stops. Port Washington could not match the Pirate height, shooting ability and team balance. Four of Coach Jim Stull's chargers ended in double figures with Butch Yakley leading the way with 19 points. All-Countian Charley Stingel added 18, Koran Zehnder had 15 and Tom Andreas 13. John Landon meshed 14 and Bill Phillips, who made the Daily Reporter's recent All-County squad as a Sophomore, ended with 10 for the Riders. Garaway took 86 shots from the field, but converted 37 for 42 percent. The Riders were almost as accurate with a 37.7 mark. However, they attempted only 61, making 23. Garaway hit 13 of 24 from the foul line and Port 5 of 11.

59 - Gnaden And Garaway In Semi-Final Round (2-13-59)

The die is cast for the semi-final round in the 37th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Basketball Tournament next Friday night. It will be Midvale (17-1) against Gnadenhutten (14-6) at 7:30PM and Tuscarawas Valley (18-1) against Garaway (13-8) at 8:45. All were seeded for the 9-team tournament that now has seen Baltic (10-11) , Strasburg (6-13), Port Washington (3-17), Tuscarawas (6-12) and Stone Creek (13-9) fall by the wayside. Gnadenhutten and Garaway qualified last night before a screaming crowd at Memorial Hall. Gnadenhutten won the rubber match of the season's activity against Stone Creek 56-53, while Garaway waltzed to an 87-49 triumph over Port Washington. The third match between Gnaden and Stone Creek proved to be another thriller, and probably was the best game on the county tourney card thus far. In the three tussles, only a total of seven points separated the two teams. Gnadenhutten won 62-60 on its home court December 19, while the Panthers took a 76-74 decision on its hardwoods February 3. Garaway met some resistance in early action of its game with Port Washington, but once rolling, was never stopped.

59 - County Tourney Resumes Action With Two Tests (2-12-59)

The semi-final field in the 37th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Basketball Tournament will be completed tonight during second-night action at Memorial Hall. Stone Creek (13-8), a 67-41 victor over Strasburg (6-13) Tuesday night, will battle seeded Gnadenhutten (13-6) in the opener of a 2-game program at 7:30. Seeded Garaway (12-8) will oppose Port Washington (3-16) in the nightcap at 8:45. The winners will join Midvale (17-1) will provide the opposition for the winner of the Stone Creek-Gnadenhutten contest and Tuscarawas Valley (18-1) awaits the Garaway-Port Washington victor. On the basis of regular-season play, the Stone Creek-Gnadenhutten game must be considered a toss-up, but Garaway gets the edge against Port Washington. Stone Creek and Gnadenhutten split in a home-and-home series during the regular season. Gnadenhutten won 62-60 at home December 19 and Stone Creek took a 76-74 verdict on its home court February 3. Garaway threw an 86-42 defeat into Port Washington December 5. Gnadenhutten will pin its hope of victory on the high-scoring Ron Bradley who tops all county schoolboy pointmakers with 501 for the season. He scored 36 and 33 in earlier Stone Creek meetings. Jim McAfee is the spearhead of the Stone Creek attack with 377 points and Harold Lahmers is next with 267. Garaway has a 1-2-3 punch in Charley Stingel, Larry Yakley and Koran Zehnder, while diminutive Bill Phillips (5-5) has been the bright ray in an otherwise Port Washington campaign. Phillips has collected 383 points.

Their opponents will be decided when first-round action is concluded tomorrow night. Stone Creek returns to action in the 7:30 opener tomorrow night against seeded Gnadenhutten (13-6), Garaway (12-8), the tourney's fourth seeded club, meets Port Washington (3-16) in the night cap at 8:45. Six teams will take steps down the long and always rough tournament trail tonight when the 37th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" County meet gets under way at Memorial Hall. The only triple-header of the tournament is slated and when it's all over, there'll be three less quintets on "heart-break path". The county affair was a double-elimination event until two years ago, but with the consolidation of Mineral City and Bolivar into Tuscarawas Valley and Dundee and Sugarcreek into Garaway, the meet was cut down to nine teams and it was turned into a single-elimination event. Tonight's opener sees Stone Creek (12-8) battling Strasburg (6-12) at 6:30, while games between Midvale (16-1) and Baltic (10-10) and Tuscarawas Valley (17-1) and Tuscarawas (6-11) will follow at 7:45 and 9, respectively. Tuscarawas Valley is the only clear-cut favorite come out with a victory in initial tourney play. In regular season play, the Trojans romped past the Broncos 69-39. Midvale, seeking its second straight championship, had a rought time with Baltic in regular play and had to settle for a 73-71 verdict. The Strasburg-Stone Creek game is another tossup. The Tigers edged the Panthers 42-39 in regular league warfare. Tourney action will resume Thursday night with Gnadenhutten (12-5) battling the winner of the Stone Creek-Strasburg game in the curtain raiser at 7:30, while Garaway (12-8) and Port Washington (3-16) get into initial tourney action at 8:45. This week's victors will then rest until Friday night, February 20, when semi-final action is scheduled. Tournament finals are Saturday, February 21, with both the champion and runner-up moving into section warfare.

Small in stature, big in scoring potential and a desire to excel. Those are the outstanding attributes of The Daily Reporter's 1958-1959 All-County Class A League basketball team. Selected from an array of outstanding players were five Seniors, four Juniors and a Sophomore. Scoring ability, value as a team player and defensive ability made up the selection yardstick. The coveted mythical team honor find Midvale's league champs and defending tournament titlists and Tuscarawas Valley receiving two berths apiece. Chosen were Bill Housel and Ron Breniser of Midvale, Ben Price and Roy Buchanan of Tuscarawas Valley, Ron Bradley of Gnadenhutten, Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas, Gary Gerber of Baltic, Jim McAfee of Stone Creek, Bill Phillips of Port Washington and Charley Stingel of Garaway. Bradley, Caviness, Price and Stingel are repeaters from last year, while Price also was honored two years ago. Averaging just 6 feet, the mythical team is one of the most prolific scoring outfits in recent years, totaling 3,466 points or an average of 18.9 points per player per game. Last year's All-County totaled 3,184 points or 17.1 per player. Bradley was the county's leading scorer with 501 points in 19 games for a 26.4 game average. He is one of five players on the team who averaged over 20 per contest. Caviness amassed 383 points in 19 games for a 22.5 average, while Price ended with 389 points in 18 games for a 21.6 average. He is the tallest man on the team at 6-5. Port Washington's 5-5 Phillips is the smallest player on the squad, but rolled up 383 points in 19 games for a 21.3 average. Breniser set the pace for Midvale with his 17-game 21 point-per-game average on 357 points. Baltic's Gerber, although not the leading scorer on the Eagle quintet, is one of the best all-around players to see action on county hardwoods this season. His 17.8 average in 20 games was among the tops, while his defensive abilities impressed many loop coaches. A team can't score unless it has the ball and that is where Midvale's Housel and Tusky Valley's Buchanan come in. At 6-3 and 6-1, they are two of the leading rebounders in the county. They also did their share of scoring with respective 190 and 239 totals. Stingel, the other 6-footer on the team, was the key in a well-balanced Garaway attack. The 6-1 Junior combined team play, scoring ability and defensive work to gain the reputation as one of the most rugged operators in the league. He ended with a 15.4 average in 20 games on 308 points. This year' honorable mention list exeplifies the fact that there were many good players.

Gnadenhutten's Ron Bradley, who set a torrid scoring pace throughout the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League season, wound up a scoring champion according to records maintained by the Daily Reporter sports department. Bradley averaged 27.1 points a game over the 8-game season to account for 217 points. Tuscarawas' Gary Caviness, a Junior veteran, took down the runner-up spot with 184 points and Ben Price, lanky Tuscarawas Valley verteran, was third with 178. Diminutive Bill Phillips of Port Washington poured in 156 points for fourth place. Fourteen players tallied over 100 points in league contests this season.

Tuscarawas County's nine Class "A" scholastic basketball teams are ready and raring to go in the 37th annual tournament which opens tomorrow night at Memorial Hall. And almost anyone could come away with the title. Midvale, although it finished its second straight unbeaten league season last Friday night, isn't expected to have as easy a time in repeating as tournament champion. The Blue Devils, who meet Baltic tomorrow night at 7:45 in the second game of a 3-game program, downed the Eagles 73-71 in league play. Midvale topped Gnadenhutten 70-63 after losing an earlier 78-76 decision, Stone Creek 45-42 and Strasburg 66-65 and 73-53. Those three teams are the other upper bracket opposition. Other games tomorrow night will pair Stone Creek and Strasburg at 6:30 and Tuscarawas Valley and Tuscarawas at 9. Tuscarawas Valley, which takes an overall 17-1 season mark into the meet, and Garaway, the league's fourth-place finisher, share the honors as having the best defense. In league action this season, the Trojans and Pirates permitted only 51.1 points to be scored against them. Tusky Valley averaged only 52.8 points on the offensive, but Coach Jim Stull's Bucs are right on the heels of Midvale's 70-point per game offensive with a 67.4 mark. Third-place Gnadenhutten ended almost even with a 59.4 mark on the offense and 56.4 on defense. Either of the three quintets could unseat the high-flying Devils. On top of that, Gnadenhutten and Tusky Valley have the first and third leading scorers in the county. Ron Bradley of the Tribe totaled 217 points in league action and has an overall total of 501 for a 26.4 average. Ben Price, the Trojans' 6-5 forward, meshed 178 points in loop action and has 389 for the season - an average of 21.6 a game. Port Washington, the loop's cellar-dweller, has the unenviable distinction of having the poorest offensive and defensive record in the county. The Riders averaged only 48.7 on the offense, while permitting a whooping total of 75.3 points per game. However, they have one of the finest small players in the area in 5-5 Bill Phillips, who totaled 383 points in 18 games. Stone Creek, which has shown flashes of brilliancy during the season, has a top scorer in Jim McAfee and one of the best rebounders in the county in Harold Lahmers. McAfee has an 18-point average overall. The Panthers also have a balanced attack, with Lahmers totaling 254 points, Dan Wherley 189 and Terry Sauser 156. Strasburg averaged 51.1 points a game, while permitting 61.8 in loop competition; Tuscarawas 55.3 and 62.1; Stone Creek 50 and 51.9, and Baltic 65.7 and 66.7. In the overall records, Baltic has the second leading scorer in John Rice, who has tailled 426 points, an average of 22.5 per game. Tuscarawas will be led by Gary Caviness, whose 22.5 overall average is also rated one of the best in the area, while pacing Strasburg this past season has been Frank Wallick who has totaled 257 points. Midvale probably has the best balanced team in the county. Ron Breniser has 357 points for the season, Tom Belknap 212, Bill Housel 190, Haines Hairston 189 and Tom Krocker 123. The latter has played only eight games and his 15-point average is among the best.

59 - Port Washington Loses Last-Minute Battle To Malvern (2-9-59)

PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington's Purple Riders (3-16) ended their season here Saturday night, but not in a successful manner. The Riders dropped a 65-64 decision to invading Malvern. It was the giant-sized job by 5-5 Bill Phillips which kept his team in the game. The mite canned 36 points. In a great come-from-behind effort, Coach Tom Davie's charges moved from a 58-50 deficit in the last two minutes of play to lead 64-62 with only 17 seconds remaining. Phillips fouled out and the infraction resulted in Malvern getting a bucket and then a charity toss for the victory. The Port Washington Reserves (5-14) however beat the Malvern Reserves by a wide margin 58-30.

Midvale's once-beaten Blue Devils, who wrapped up their second straight unbeaten Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Championship when the loop concluded action last night, was the top-seeded pick this morning when coaches and school officials met to draw for the 37th annual loop tournament starting Tuesday at Memorial Hall. Tuscarawas Valley, Gnadenhutten and Garaway also were given seeded positions. Midvale will collide with Baltic in the second game of a 3-game program Tuesday night at 7:45. Stone Creek and Strasburg will meet in the opener at 6:30 and Tuscarawas Valley will play Tuscarawas in the 9PM windup. Two games are scheduled next Thursday night with Gnadenhutten meeting the Stone Creek-Strasburg winner at 7:30 and Garaway battling Port Washington at 8:45. Semi-final games will be played Friday night, February 21. The tournament champion and runner-up will advance to the Dover Sectional scheduled February 24-27-28. Midvale (16-1) and Tuscarawas Vallely (17-1) are in opposite tourney brackets. Baltic, Gnadenhutten, Stone Creek and Strasburg are in the upper bracket with Midvale, while Tuscarawas Valley, Tuscarawas, Garaway and Port Washington are in lthe lower bracket.

59 - Midvale Crushes Port For League Title 90-41 (2-7-59)

MIDVALE - Coach Pete Hilliard used a total of 11 players, but still couldn't keep his Midvale (8-0) (16-1) cagers from piling up the score over Port Washington (0-8) (3-15). And to top it all, a celebration was held with players being treated to a supper immediately following the game. A victory dance followed. To say the Devils had an easy time with the Riders is an understatement. With the exception of 5-5 guard Bill Phillips, who ended the night with 20 points, and John Landon, who had 10, the Riders served up very little in the way of an offense or defense. Midvale rolled to quarter margins of 20-9, 39-15 and 58-30. Tom Krocker was the big man in the attack with 24 points, while Hanes Hairston followed with 16 and Ron Breniser 13, Ron Kaderly had 12. The Reserve game was no better for Port as the Midvale Reserves (13-4) won handedly, 69-28 over the 4-14 Port Washington Reserves 69-28.

Coach Pete Hillard's Midvale Blue Devils wrapped up their second straight undefeated Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Championship last night in a 90-41 romp over Port Washington. Midvale's Blue Devils (8-0) did it in convincing fashion. By rolling to an easy 90-41 triumph Friday night over Port Washington (0-8), the Blue Devils wrapped up their second straight unbeaten Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Championship. They now have a string of 16 straight league wins. Tuscarawas Valley (7-1) finished in the runner-up spot by disposing of Baltic (3-5) 73-53. The Trojans, who lost only to Midvale during the league campaign, could have gained a share of the championship had Midvale lost. In the other league game last night, Garaway (5-3) pinned a 79-38 defeat on Tuscarawas (2-6) to pin down fourth place behind Gnadenhutten. Last night's program concluded the loops campaign and also regular-season activity for all except Port Washington. The Purple Riders will ring down the curtain on their season tonight by entertaining Malvern. Drawings for the 37th annual league tournament which starts next Tuesday night at Memorial Hall were scheduled this morning in County Superintendent W. E. Laws' office. The tounament will also be played February 12, February 20 and February 21.

59 - Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League Scoring (2-5-59)

PHOTO: Port Washington Purple Riders - Left To Right: Junior Larry Hagan, Sophomore Bill Phillips, Coach Thomas Davies, and Junior John Landon. MAP BASKETBALL STRATEGY - Port Washington hasn't had much success this season, but the Purple Riders will be out to pull the upset of the year Friday night when they invade Midvale to help wind up the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League season. Coach Davies, concluding his first year at the helm, goes over some strategy for the Blue Devils with his team veterans.
*
*
Midvale's Blue Devils will be easily favored to come out of Friday night's final activity in the Tuscarawas County "A" League with their second straight unbeaten championship. The Blue Devils, who posted a 61-51 victory over Port Washington in a non-league meeting on the Midvale court December 30, will be after their eighth straight league decision against the Purple Riders tomorrow night. Port hasn't won any of seven previous loop contests and has lost 16 straight league games including back to the 1956-1957 and 1957-1958 seasons. Meanwhile, Tuscarawas Valley's Trojans will play host to Baltic and Garaway invades Tuscarawas. Tuscarawas Valley must get by Baltic (3-4) and then hope for an upset in the Midvale-Port clash in order to gain a share of the championship. The Trojans of Coach Bob Helier have lost only to Midvale in previous loop warfare. Garaway (4-3) will attempt to cement its fourth-place rung in the standings against Tuscarawas (2-5). The Broncos will pin their hopes of a victory on the high-scoring Gary Caviness. Caviness held to the runnerup spot in individual scoring last week despite being limited to 14 points by Tuscasrawas Valley. The Junior veteran has 184 points, 57 points shy of Gnadenhutten's Ron Bradley who finished his league season two weeks ago with 217 points. Tuscasrawas Valley's Ben Price moved into third place with 146 points, replacing Midvale's Ron Breniser who didn't see league activity last week. Breniser skidded to seventh behind Bill Phillips of Port Washington, Jim McAfee of Stone Creek and John Rice of Baltic. With the exception of Port Washington, Friday's games will close the season for all the league teams. Port has a Saturday night engagement with Malvern for its finale.

59 - Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball Season Standings And Scoring (2-3-59)

Tuscarawas County's Class "A" Basketball ranks can boast one of the highest scoring groups in recent history. Four more schoolboy cagers surpassed the 300-point mark last week, bringing to eight the number past that mark this season. The most recent additions to the "elite" are Ben Price of Tuscarawas Valley, Jim McAfee of Stone Creek, Bill Phillips of Port Washington and Ron Breniser of Midvale. Price pushed his season total to 339 in last week's contests, McAfee now has 317 for the year, Phillips has tossed in 327 and Breniser has accounted for 312. Two of the previous four club members have gone on to soar above the 400-point mark. Gnadenhutten's Ron Bradley now has 443 for the campaign and Baltic's John Rice has 408. Other previous members of the 300-point group were Gary Gerber of Baltic and Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas. Two more performers - Charley Stingel and Larry Yakley of Garaway - should top the 300-point this week. Stingel has 292 and Yakley 284. Tuscarawas Valley's Trojans and Midvale's blue Devils continued as the county's winningest clubs last week. The Trojans now have won 15 of 16, while Midvale has been victorious in 14 of 15.

PORT WASHINGTON - Hiland's Hawks (15-1) on Saturday night whipped Port Washington (3-14) 75-35. Coach Bob Schrock's charges had little trouble. They snared a 24-9 lead at the first stop and then 37-14, 56-19 margins. Port could not cope with the overall ability and well-balanced attack of the Hawks. Bill Phillips, Port's leading scorer, sat out the latter part of the third period and the entire fourth stanza following a minor bump on his head suffered when he crashed into a wall. Linus Miller was the big man for the victors when he meshed 14 points. Glenn Gerber added 10. Jim Bender's 14 were top for the losers. It was much the same in the Reserve game as Hiland beat Port Washington (4-13) 51-36.

59 - Strasburg Clips Port Washington 77-63 (1-31-59)

PHOTO: Port Washington Purple Riders Sophomore - Bill Phillips 27 Points.

Port Washington's second-best scoring punch of the season wasn't quite good enough last night as Strasburg (2-6) (5-11) unleashed its best. The Bengals, having one of the school's few losing seasons, also unveiled a promising Freshman for the first time and put together a scoring attack which featured six men in double figures - much to the misfortune of a game and hustling Port (0-7) (3-13) combine. Jim Clymer, a 5-11 Frosh making his second appearance in a varsity uniform, hit 12 points for the Bengals of Coach Ernest Raber, while Frank Wallick led the overall team with 20. Nick Haswell tallied 13, Bill Seese scored 11, Walt Krantz and Tom Jones each tallied 10. Playing one of his best all around games of the season, 5-5 Bill Phillips led the Port machine with 27 markers, while John Landon and Larry Hagan also were in two numbers with 11 and 16 points, respectively. Port stayed right with the bigger Bengals for three quarters before falling under the pressure. The Bengals took a 10-0 lead at the start, but were pushed hard after that as the Purple Riders trailed 20-18 at the first halt. Still holding on, Port was behind only 34-31 at intermission and then trailed 56-46 going into the final. Port faired better in the Reserve game as the Port Washington Reserves (4-12) knocked off the Strasburg Reserves 51-38.
