It was a nip-and-tuck battle all the way at Port Washington as the Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (2-0) pulled a rabbit's foot out of the duffle bag to eke out their one-point decision over the Purple Riders (0-1) (1-1). Charles Seldenright emerged as the star of the contest as he scored all four of his points in the thrilling final quarter and sank two free throws near the close of the game to decide the verdict after Port Washington had copped a one-point lead momentarily. Coach Bray Toot's Riders were in front 20-13 at the first period's close, but trailed 36-33 at half time. The two teams were knotted 51-51 going into the closing round. Failure to convert on free throws was disasterous to Port Washington as the riders sank only 18 of 45 allotted shots, while Midvale was making good on 15 of 24 tries. The winners were outscored by six points from action. Dick Leggett with 22 points topped the Midvale scoring while Ed Bates and Tom Jones with 21 each led the Purple Riders. Nick Frank was close behind with 19. In the Reserve game it was Port Washington (2-0) over Midvale 48-44 while the Port Washington Grade School (2-0) also beat Midvale 24-19.
