Stone Creek (0-0) (0-1) gave the Port Washington High's Purple Riders (0-0) (1-0) all they wanted for a little over three quarters, but the Bray Toot-coached hoopsters turned on the steam in the waning moments of play to upend the Panthers in a mutual lid-lifter at Stone Creek last night. The Panthers had a tough time coping with Port's height, but made a real issue of it. They led 18-17 after a quarter and were in front by two points on two occasions in the third period after falling behind 29-27 at the half. However, the Riders grabbed a 43-40 advantage in the third frame and turned it into a rout in the last three minutes. Tom Jones and Nick Frank, who followed teammate Bob Welsch in the scoring department for Port, bagged 14 and 10 points respectively in the second half. Bob Welsch got all eight of his fielders in the first half, including a half-dozen in the second panel. For Stone Creek, coached by Leo Gower, the flashy Ronnie Deibel tossed in 19 markers to lead all point-makers. Ron Reinhart tallied 14 and Dave Wherley 11. Ben Wherley, Panthers defensive stalwart, was handicapped by an ankle injury sustained when he fell on the slippery floor early in the game. The floor was somewhat slippery due to moisture. It was a bad night for the Panthers indeed. They lost the nip and tuck reserve fray 41-37 and the junior high tussle by a 40-17 count. The Port Washington Reserves and Port Washington Junior High teams are both (1-0).
