A victory over the dangerous, high-scoring Port Washington Purple Riders tonight would give the Strasburg Tigers their fourth consecutive undefeated county league cage championship and would be the 41st straight circuit victory for the Battling Bengals. Not since January 25, 1952, when a Gnadenhutten combine pulled the trick, has a county court team been able to defeat a Strasburg aggregation in league competition. The Tigers, unbeaten also in seven non-league contests as well as nine loop tilts, meet the Purple Riders at Strasburg in the spotlighted attraction on the final night of league activity. Should Port Washington with a 12-5 season mark and a 6-3 loop record, upset the Tigers and the Midvale Blue Devils best the Sugarcreek Pirates at Midvale, the league would wind up in a two-way tie. Midvale is in the runnerup spot with an 8-1 mark, while fifth place Sugarcreek has won five of nine loop tilts. In other circuit engagements, third place Gnadenhutten (7-2) is at Mineral City (1-8), Baltic (3-5) is at Stone Creek (4-5), and Dundee, winless in nine games, is at Bolivar (2-7). Port Washington has hit over 100 points on four occasions in league triumphs over Stone Creek, Dundee, Baltic and Mineral City. The nearest the terrific Tigers of Coach Ken Newlon have come to defeat was in a non-league tussle against Class "A" Sandy Valley. Strasburg copped a 63-58 verdict over the Cardinals. Sugarcreek's Pirates may give the Blue Devils a rugged time at Midvale while the Baltic-Stone Creek and Dundee-Bolivar clashes are also expected to be close ones. Gnadenhutten is favored over the 10th place Mineral City Tigers.

Tuscarawas County B Tournament (2-07-56)
WILL STRASBURG repeat as Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament kingpin? This question won't be answered until the night of February 25th, but already area cage fans are buzzing over the prospects for the rugged double-elimination shindig which is to be unveiled at Memorial Hall a week from tonight. One can't help but wonder what the annual tourney has in store. You have to remember that "Heartbreak Highway" can claim more than one favorite and that it is not too unusual when a weak-sister bobs up to smite "Mr. Big." Last year the four top-racking clubs were in one bracket, but the blind draw held last Saturday in the office of Supt. W.E. Laws tournament director, changed this. In the upper bracket we have the top-seeded Bengals and third-seeded Gnadenhutten, while in the lower bracket we have second-seeded Midvale and fourth-seeded Port Washington. You can be sure thrills and spills will be abundant in the 18-game cage carnival. We'd be willing to wager our last collar button that the three games opening night will be humdingers. Stone Creek and Sugarcreek-Shanesville, which open the tourney at 6:30 next Tuesday night, appear pretty evenly matched as do Mineral City-Tuscarawas and Dundee-Bolivar. And if Baltic has its shooting eyes sharpened the Eagles, we figure, could make matters tough on Port Washington. All teams in the first round games have met each other before. Stone Creek downed the Pirates 68-58, Tusky stopped Mineral City 73-69 in an overtime and Bolivar eked out a 61-59 nod over Dundee. Port Washington hit 103 points against Baltic, but the Eagles pitched in 73. If the tournament would run true to form the four seeded teams will be in the semi-finals with two of them going onto the titular struggle. The last three settoes could prove to be mighty interesting. Of the three top teams we've caught Strasburg, Midvale and Gnaden in action. Strasburg dropped both foes by comfortable margins, but neither the Blue Devils nor the Indians are ready to concede a single point. WE'VE HEARD PLENTY OF TALK ABOUT THE COUNTY POWERS AND STRANGE AS IT MAY SEEM THE COACHES FIGURE PORT WASHINGTON AS THE "TEAM TO BEAT." YOU TAKE IT FROM THERE.

Stone Creek, Sugar-Shanes Open Tourney (2-4-56)
Stone Creek (11-7) and Sugarcreek-Shanesville (9-9) will inaugurate the 1956 Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall on Tuesday, February 14. Drawings for the 34th annual county cage carnival, held in the office of W.E. Laws, superintendent of county schools, also pared Mineral City (3-15) against Tuscarawas (6-10) and Dundee (2-15) against Bolivar 5-12) for opening night action. Stone Creek's Panthers and the Pirates of Sugarcreek-Shanesville will square off at 6:30PM with the Mineral City-Tusky clash set for 7:45 and the Dundee-Bolivar tussle for 9 o'clock. Since Strasburg and Midvale rank as the two top teams in the county league they were automatically placed in opposite brackets as were Gnadenhutten, the third place team, and Port Washington, which is fourth. Strasburg (15-0) which drew the upper bracket and the first bye, meets the Stone Creek-Sugarcreek winner on Friday, February 17, while Gnadenhutten (16-2) goes against the Mineral City-Tusky victor the same night in another upper bracket fray. The same evening, in the lower bracket Port Washington (12-5) will take on Baltic (6-11). Midvale (13-5), which drew the lower bracket and an automatic bye, does not see action until Saturday, February 18 when they meet the Dundee-Bolivar winner. After the three games Tuesday February 14 and two February 15, there will be three on February 17 and three February 18.

Strasburg Prevales 71-62 (2-4-56)
MIGHTY STRASBURG, which has been top dog on the Tuscarawas County Class B League totem pole 15 times, today required only one more victory for another regular season championship. The talented Tigers, remaining undefeated and scoring their ninth straight league success, last night on the home planks polished off Midvale, heretofore unbeaten in loop play, by a 71-62 count. The Blue Devils, who couldn't offset Strasburg's white-hot shooting the first half, had a chance to tie the Bengals. When circuit competition comes to a close next Friday night Midvale will meet Sugarcreek-Shanesville at home, while the Tigers are hosting dangerous Port Washington. If Strasburg bows and Midvale wins the two teams will be deadlocked for the post position. However, a Strasburg triumph will give the Tigers the title, regardless of how the Middies fare. And if Midvale should lose, Gnadenhutten could tie for the runnerup shot. Gnaden powered past Bolivar 68-40 for its seventh victory in nine starts last night. Midvale now has won eight and lost one. In other games Port flattened Tuscarawas 84-44, Stone Creek outlasted Dundee 98-80 and Baltic nipped Mineral City 79-78 on a late fielder by Glen Reidenbach. In other league frays next Friday Baltic will invade Stone Creek, Dundee shows at Bolivar and Gnaden at Mineral City. Here are the standings:
*
1. Strasburg 9-0
2. Midvale 8-1
3. Gnadenhutten 7-2
4. Port Washington 6-3
5. Sugarcreek-Shanesville 5-4

Frank Sparks Port Washington 84-44 (2-4-56)
Port Washington (6-3) (12-5), last obstacle to another unbeaten loop season for Strasburg, had little difficulty in romping to an impressive victory over Tuscarawas (5-5) (6-10) as the Broncos failed to provide expected opposition. The Purple Riders led 21-12, 41-22 and 52-34 at the breaks en route to their 12th victory. Nick Frank's spree of 13 field goals and four foul tosses for 30 points sparked the Port Washington attack, while Ed Bates had 18, Tom Jones 12 and Denver Glazer 11 for the Riders. The Broncos were topped by Bob Vesco and Ted Riggle with 13 and 12 points, respectively. In the Reserve game, Tuscarawas cut down Port Washington (13-3) 50-46. The Port Washington Graders (4-3) also lost to Tuscarawas 39-32.

Bengals, Devils Collide In Vital League Contest (2-3-56)
THE UNBEATEN juggernuts of the Tuscarawas County Class B cage circuit, Strasburg's Bengals and Midvale's Blue Devils, come to gripe at Strasburg tonight. And more than likely the 1956 loop diadam will be at stake. Both teams have turned the tables on league foes eight times and tonight's winner, whether it be the Ken Newlon-coached Orange or the dangerous Blue Devils mentored by Pete Hillard, will be in strong position to take all the marbles. The battle of the two teams will be one of five league scuffles. Others send Mineral City (1-7) to Baltic (2-6), Bolivar (2-6) to Gnadenhutten (6-2), Stone Creek (3-5) to Dundee (0-8) and Tuscarawas (5-4) to Port Washington (5-3). The fray at Port looms as a vital one as the Raiders and Tusky are vying with Sugarcreek-Shanesville for first division honors. The Pirates are idle in loop play, but meet Greentown at the Buc lair.
*
BENGALS FAVORED
*
Strasburg, aiming for its 15th county league title, must be tagged as the favorite - a slight one in view of the intense rivalry - because the Bengals will be playing on their home floor. They also own a 69-58 non-league win over the Middies, who have an overall record of 13 victories as compared to four reversals. Strasburg has punched out six non-league triumphs. Four of the area's top performers, Jim Kuecher and Jerry Froman of Straburg and Larry Swinderman and Dick Leggett of Midvale, will be seen in action. In 14 tussles Kuecher has pumped home 300 points and Froman 208 while in 17 games Swinderman has notched 397 and Leggett 318. These stars have excellent supporting casts. Ron Grayk, bespectacled Strasburg pivot, has tallied 146 points, while John Columbo and John Beans of the Blue Devils have made 146 and 185, respectively. Gary Haney is the other Midvale starter, while Willie Rieger and Lloyd Deibel round out the Bengals' starting array.
*
LOOP FINALES
*
After tonight's card the county season will mark its ending for the year on Friday, February 10 when Strasburg hosts Port Washington, Midvale entertains Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Gnadenhutten goes to Mineral City, Dundee shows at Bolivar and Baltic invades Stone Creek. The big one at Strasburg will start at about 8:45. There will be a grade school game at 6:30 and the reserves will start at approximately 7:30. Doors to the gym will open at 6PM. Port Washington and Stone Creek will be trying for repeat wins tonight as Port whipped Tusky 82-49 and the Creekers topped Dundee 85-59 in non-league frays previously. Port will also be trying for its sixth straight victory. Gnaden, with an overall record of 15 and 2, hopes to tighten its grip on third place.

Strasburg Stays Even Via Win Over Priates (1-28-56)
THE STAGE WAS SET for the Tuscarawas County Class B League's game of the year last night when the two principals, Midvale and Strasburg, came through their eighth circuit game without a stain. Midvale's Blue Devils had the daylights scared out of them, but outlasted Gnadenhutten 75-68 in a thriller decided at the foul line on the Midvale planks, while Strasburg drove to a 66-30 lacing of outmanned Sugarcreek-Shanesville High at Sugarcreek. Thus the "big one" faces the two rivals who are leading the league. They'll clash at the Strasburg gymnasium next Friday night with the victor apparently destined to rule supreme for the 1955-56 season. Gnadenhutten's loss was only its second in 17 outings, while Midvale, which got revenge for a previous setback inflicted by the Indians, now has won 13 of 17. There were a pair of high-scoring derbies and another spinetingler last night when Port Washington outshot Mineral city 104-84 and Tuscarawas polished off Baltic 96-76 in the racehorse tussles. In the other fray Stone Creek barely got by spunky Bolivar 61-60. Other games next Friday night will find Tusky visiting Port, Bolivar invading Gnaden, Stone Creek going to Dundee and Mineral City showing at Baltic. The standings now look like this:
*
1. Strasburg 8-0
2. Midvale 8-0
3. Gnadenhutten 6-2
4. Port Washington 5-3
5. Sugarcreek-Shanesville 5-4

Raiders Hit Century 4th Time 104-84 (1-28-56)
A Total of 188 points was registered in the scorebooks at Mineral City last night when the Raiders of Port Washington (5-3) (11-5) decisioned the Tigers (2-6) (2-14) thanks to a big first half assault on the nets. Port, with Ed Bates and Tom Jones as the shining lights, led 28-22 after one quarter and then blitzed the cords for 38 points in the second frame and took a 64-41 advantage into its dressing room at intermission. Mineral, led by Paul Lindsay and Ben Price, outscored the visitors 43-40 in the second half, but couldn't climb into contention. Ed Bates, who made 26 markers in the first half, ended with 38, six more than Lindsey, who garnered 32 in three periods. He went scoreless in the third stanza. Hitting on his pet jump shot Ed Bates collected 17 goals and four fouls. Tom Jones had 25 markers, while Ben Price canned 26. The Port Washington Reserves (13-2) continued to be hot by beating up the Mineral City Reserves 64-36. The Port Washington Graders (4-2) made it a sweep by slamming the Mineral City Graders 56-32.

Tuscarawas County B League Action (1-26-56)
Gnadenhutten, one of the winningest teams around with 15 victories as against only a loss to Strasburg, will be seeking to pin the first defeat on Midvale (12-4) in league play in the loop's feature attraction. The Indians nipped the Blue Devils 72-66 in an overtime in a non-league contest at Gnadenhutten and own a 6-1 league mark as compared to Midvale's perfect 7-0 circuit record. Strasburg's defending titlists, with a 7-0 league record and a perfect season record of 12 triumphs in as many starts, will be favored to win over the Pirates at Sugarcreek (7-8) and 5-3), while the Port Washington Purple Riders (10-5 and 4-3) are favored over the Tigers at Mineral City (2-13 and 2-6). Other circuit clashes have Baltic's Eagles (5-10 and 2-6) at Tuscarawas against the Broncos (4-8 and 4-4), while Stone Creek's Panthers (8-7 and 2-5) travel to battle the Bolivar Cardinals (6-9 and 2-6). The other tussle belongs to Dundee (2-12) will trek to Malvern (3-9).

Port Breezes Past Malvern 77-38 (1-25-56)
It took the Port Washington Purple Riders (4-3) (10-5) two quarters to snap out of their lethargy, but they had little difficulty in recording their fourth straight win with an easy victory over the Malvern Green Hornets last night. Ahead by 15-9 after one quarter, the Riders found themselves matched in pointmaking the second frame as they took the long rest break with a 28-21 margin. With Ed Bates, Tom Jones and Nick Frank showing the way, the host club roared to a 46-27 lead during the third quarter and then coasted to the decision. Ed Bates concluded as top scorer with 18 points, while Nick Frank hit 15 and Tom Jones 13. Bob Benedict tallied 15 to lead Malvern. The Port Washington Reserves (12-2) picked up another win beating the Malvern Reserves 52-36. The Port Washington Reserves are having one of their best years ever. Don't miss a game folks.

Strasburg Regains First (1-21-56)
THE BATTLE FOR the regular season championship in the Tuscarawas County Class B League was a three-way affair after Strasburg (7-0) moved back in a tie with Midvale (7-0) for first place and Gnadenhutten (6-1) took a firmer grip on the No. 3 slot last night. The Bengals from Strasburg, with Jim Kuecher and Jerry Froman igniting the attack, notched their seventh consecutive league victory 79-57 over Stone Creek (2-5), while Gnaden (6-1), beaten only once, handed Sugarcreek-Shanesville (5-3) it's third loss by a 79-54 count. Port Washington (4-3) going over the century mark for the second straight time, moved above the .500 mark as it thumped Baltic (2-5) 103-73, while the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-4)smacked down Dundee (0-8) 80-66 and Bolivar (2-5) avenged a previous setback at the hands of Mineral City (1-8), 59-49. The next league card is scheduled for Friday, January 27 when Baltic appears at Tuscarawas, Stone Creek at Bolivar, Strasburg at Sugarcreek, Port at Mineral City and Midvale and Gnadenhutten fight it out at the Middle lair. Midvale was idle last night.

Port Scores 33 In 3rd Period 103-73 (1-21-56)
In hitting the century mark for the third time in loop action, Port Washington (4-3) (9-5) broke loose with a 33-point third quarter to put the skids under the Baltic Eagles (2-6) (5-10). Coach Jack Bellville's Eagles trailed by only 10 points, 29-19 and 48-38, at the first two stops, but the outburst in the third frame put the Riders in front 81-53 going into the closing chukker. At the outset of the tilt, Baltic rushed to a 6-0 lead, but trailed the rest of the way after the host club knotted the court and then forged to the fore. The Purple Riders of Coach Bray Toot were sparked by Ed Bates and Denver Glazer who meshed 26 and 24 points, respectively. George Regula and Glen Reidenbach caged 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the Eagles. In the Reserve game, Port Washington (11-2) topped Baltic 57-42. The Graders game was won by Baltic over Port Washington 46-23.

46 Goals For Purple Riders 108-74 (1-14-56)
No difficulty whatsoever was experienced by the Port Washington Purple Riders (3-3) (8-5) as they coasted to their easy, lopsided decision over the cellar dwelling Dundee Bulldogs (0-7) (1-10). Coach Bray Toot substituted freely in an effort to hold down the score, but the Purple Riders reserves also had their shooting eyes in focus and the Bulldogs were hopelessly outclassed as they trailed 34-16, 62-31 and 82-50 at the breaks. A total of 11 Riders broke into the scoring column, five of them hitting in double figures with Tom Jones and Nick Frank each collecting 23. Five Bulldogs also tallied in twin digits, Gary Slemmer caging 19 points and Al Dildine garnering 17 to lead the way. The Port Washington Reserves (10-2) Walloped the Dundee Reserves 44-29. In the Grade games, Port Washington (3-1) also dumped Dundee 42-26 for a Port Washington sweep for the night.

STRASBURG'S Bob Grimm, who has been one of several area athetes affected by the new state ruling which keeps a 19-year-old out of high school sports if he reaches that age prior to September, has quit the Bengal basketball team and enlisted in the Army. The husky Grimm, football fullback and invaluable substitute on Ken Newlon's cage club, won't enter the service until next March, but has decided to stay away from the basket court for the rest of the season. The rule was approved by a recent referendum by high school principals and last Saturday the state board of control ruled that it did not have authority to alter a referendum. The measure allows athletes reaching 19 after November 1 to play basketball and those becoming 19 after March 1 to participate in spring sports. The Principals also set October 1 as the starting time of practice for basketball teams not playing football and November 1 for those playing football. Up to that time cage teams have been practicing from the start of school, or shall we say from the end of one season until the start of the next. The only barrier to the schoolboy was that he couldn't play on an independent team after the season. The rule did not apply to intramural ball and that's where the basketball coach had his year-round opportunity. Even with the new rules the basketball season is six months for non-football schools and five months for football schools. What about track? Some schools over-emphasize their track programs far more than coaches emphasize football or basketball. There are practically no restrictions on track. They can work out the year round. Some of the larger schools around the state have facilities to work out indoors when the weather is bad. Usually these are the teams which always figure in the state meet "money."

Port Blasts Tusky 82-49 (1-11-56)
Port Washington (2-3) (7-5) couldn't do much wrong at Tuscarawas last night and went home with a victory over the Broncos (3-3) (4-8). Port went in front 18-13 at the first stop and limited Tusky to 10 points in each of the remaining quarters, while they netted almost everything they shot for the lop-sided decision. Denver Glazer paced Port with 23 points and had nine of 10 foul shots. Actually, Glazer failed to miss any attempt at the charity stripe, but one of his teammates nullified one ace when he stepped in the lane too quickly, Ed Bates had 16. Ted Riggle canned 19 for the combine of Coach Ron Easton. The Port Washington Reserves (9-2) nipped the Tusky Reserves 58-55.

Midvale Faces Stern Test (1-10-56)
A 5-game bill has Tuscarawas and Gnadenhutten of the county schools as hot teams. In what could be the top battle of the night, the Midvale Blue Devils show at West Lafayette. The Blue Devils lead the county league and boast an overall slate of 10 wins in a dozen outings, while the Generals of West Lafayette have been topped only by Newcomerstown in seven trials. The Generals lead the Coshocton County B pack via six victories. Their loss was by an 83-78 count to the Trojans. Tusky (4-8) takes on Port Washington 6-5) at home, while Beach City entertains Sugarcreek-Shanesville (5-4). Bolivar and Baltic hit the road with Bolivar invading Greentown and Baltic visiting Fresno. Bolivar's Cards will be after their fourth win in 11 games, while Baltic, which has won three in a row and four of seven, goes for revenge at Greentown, a 65-63 victor over the Eagles in a season's opener. Gnaden, which triumphed 63-47 over Dennison in a previous hassle, risks its 11-1 mark against the Railroaders who have captured only two of eight decisions. The Pirates of Sugarcreek-Shanesville will be on the hunt for their fourth straight win.

Blue Devils Stop Stone Creek For 6th In Row (1-7-56)
MIDVALE'S VICTORY over Stone Creek which sent the Blue Devils atop the Tuscarawas County Class B League standings, an overtime argument which saw the Tuscarawas Broncos shade Mineral City and hard-earned triumphs by Baltic, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Gnadenhutten marked circuit competition Friday night. The Midvale hustlers moved ahead of likewise unbeaten Strasburg when they clipped the Panthers by an 81-69 count. The Blue Devils now have won six in a row while the Bengals, who were idle last night, have copped all five of their league starts. Tusky turned back the challenge of Mineral City 73-69, while in other close ones, Baltic tamed Dundee 81-76, Sugarcreek-Shanesville decisioned Bolivar 53-46 and Gnaden took the measure of Port Washington 64-58. The results lift Gnaden in third place followed by Sugarcreek-Shanesville, which has won four and lost two. Tusky, the only other team above water, has won three and lost three. The standings may be changed next Friday when the league schedule has Sugarcreek-Shanesville at Baltic, Bolivar at Strasburg, Dundee at Port, Gnaden at Stone Creek and Midvale at Tusky. Of course every performer who appeared in the five frays played a hand with Jim Uher of Baltic and Ted Riggle of Tusky hauling down point-making laurels. The Standings:

Gnaden Indians Outlast Port 64-58 (1-7-56)
Although Port Washington (2-3) (6-5) threatened continuously, the Gnadenhutten Indians (4-1) (11-1) managed to stave off all the Purple Rider threats to maintain their lead after jumping to a 6-0 edge early in the contest. After the Riders had missed three easy shots at the outset of the game, the Indians took command and were in front 14-8 at the quarter's end. The Tribe led at the half 32-26 and boosted their advantage to 10 points midway in the third quarter before Port trimmed the deficit to three points, 48-45, going into the final frame. Ed Shull, having the best night of his scholastic career, kept the Redskins out in front with his one-handed jump shots from near the foul circle and the Tribesmen had their 11th victory and their second nod over Port. Only five cagers played for the winners and Eldon Miller led the scoring with 18 points followed by Shull with 16, Lloyd Porter with 14 and Glen Hines with 12. Port Washington, dropping its third straight game, had the evening's top scorer in Ed Bates who tallied 26 while Tom Jones had 17. A total of 27 fouls were called, 14 against the winners who made 12 of 20 free throws, while Port Washington dropped through 12 of 21 tries. The Port Washington Reserves (8-2) bounced the Gnadenhutten Reserves 45-41). The Port Washington Grades (2-1) lost to the Gnadenhutten Graders 46-39.

Midvale Chalks Up 9th Victory 75-64 (12-28-55)
Midvale's once-beaten Blue Devils (5-0) (8-1), who nipped Port Washington (2-2) (6-4) in November, had a slightly easier time disposing of the Riders in the friendly confines of their home gymnasium last night. With four players scoring in double digits, the Blue Devils stopped Port for their ninth success. The loss in the non-league fracas was Port's fourth in 10 starts. After a close first quarter, Pete Hilliard's array moved to a 39-27 halftime lead, but Port rallied to cut the gap to seven points in the third frame. Despite the loss of Larry Swinderman and Dick Leggett on personals, the hosts were able to stretch the difference during the last period. Leggett was held to 10 points, his lowest total of the season, before leaving with four minutes left. Swinderman fouled out with two minutes remaining. However, Swinderman paced the Midvale attack on 23 points followed by Guard John Beans with 20 while forward John Columbo netted 14. Port had the top point-maker of the evening in Ed Bates, who pumped in 25 markers. However, his only teammate scoring in double figures was Denver Glazer who made 10. The Port Washington Reserves (7-2) dumped the Midvale Reserves 53-44.

Strasburg, Midvale Tied For League Leadership (12-21-55)
The current basketball season is a long way from being over, but it looks like Strasburg once again is the team to be reckoned with in the Tuscarawas County Class B shoot-and-dribble sport. Previous victors over Midvale, the smooth-operating Bengals stopped another unbeaten skein last night when they smacked down Gnadenhutten 73-65. The victory was their eighth in a row and fifth in league action, left them as the county's only outfit with a clean slate and put them in a tie with Midvale for league leadership. Gnadenhutten, which certainly can't be ruled out of the race, had won nine in a row (three in the league) before the blazing Bengals tutored by young Ken Newlon applied the crusher. Midvale tacked up its fifth league win and its eighth in nine engagements at Bolivar where the Cardinals staged a surprisingly good fight before yielding 46-43. While in other league frays Sugarcreek-Shanesville turned the tables on Port Washington 65-58, Mineral City bested Dundee's Bulldogs 94-89 in an overtime duel and Tuscarawas came back in the second half to upend Stone Creek by a 73-68 count. Today Gnadenhutten was the occupant of third place in the county circuit followed by the Sugarcreek-Shanesville combination. Stone Creek and Port are tied for fifth.

Pirates Surprise Port 65-58 (12-21-55)
Sugarcreek-Shanesville's in-and-out cagers were at peak form on the home planks last night. And today the Pirates (3-2) (4-4) were beating the drums over their upset of Port Washington (2-2) (6-3), which saw chances for its seventh triumph knocked into limbo in the last two and a half minutes of action. The Bucs, spearheaded by Bill Gerber and Ted Brown and getting fine support from Jim Troyer and Danny Bear, thus registered their fourth victory against as many starts and assumed fourth place in the county league on a three-two record. The Port crew was bigger and had the top point-maker of the evening in Tom Jones, but Sugarcreek-Shanesville, once it moved into the van, was determined not to let victory out of its grasp. Port led most of the first quarter, but the Bucs held an 18-16 magin going into the second heat during which they jacked the difference to four points. After leading by 52-45 at the end of the third chukker the Pirates turned on the steam and stretched their advantage to 10 points before the visitors rallied in vain. Gerber and Brown divided 32 points, while Troyer canned 15 markers and Bear collected 14. For Port, Tom Jones pushed in 20 followed by Bob Welsch with 15 and Denver Glazer with 12. The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Reserves also picked up a win by downing the Port Washington Reserves (6-2) 44-41.

Spotlight On Game At Gnaden (12-20-55)
The bill of fare tonight is headed by the Strasburg-Gnadenhutten encounter which will leave the county with only one unbeaten array. This fracas, which will find the Bengals of Strasburg putting a seven-game win string on the line and the Indians of Gnaden endangering a nine-game streak, will be played before an overflow turnout at the Tribe court. Although this is the battle of the perfect record teams first place in the county league will not be at stake. Strasburg currently shares the leadership with Midvale's Blue Devils as each has won four straight while Gnaden has recorded three in a row.
*
COMMON FOES
*
The two teams have met three common foes in Tuscarawas, Dundee and Baltic. Tusky lost to the power-packed Indians twice 77-60 and 51-45 and to Strasburg 64-42. Dundee was a 92-23 victim of the Tribe and 84-50 of the Begals while Baltic bowed to Gnaden 87-60 and to Strasburg 76-49. Coach Ken Newton of Strasburg will probably start Jim Kuecher and Ron Grey, both 6-1 at the fowards, 6-1 Willie Reiger at center and 5-11 Jerry Froman and 5-9 Lloyd Deibel at guards. The Gnaden lineup will probably consist of 5-7 Glen Hines and 6-1 Charles Albaugh at the forecourt spots, 6-0 Lloyd Porter at center and 5-8 Ed Shull and 6-0 Eldon Miller at guards. In four other county league engagements Midvale will invade Bolivar, Dundee will visit Mineral City, Port Washington will show at Sugarcreek and Tusky will go to Stone Creek.
*
NEW LEADER?
*
Stone Creek and Port Washington will be attempting to keep their league records on a winning vein. Each has copped two of three in the circuit, while Port has an overall record of six and two and the Panthers have won six of nine. Sugarcreek-Shanesville has lost four of seven including two wins and two losses in the league while Tusky has bowed five times in six starts and has won only once in four league spins. The tussle at Mineral City will bring together teams with identical records as both the Tigers and Dundee have captured but one decision in seven starts. Both are winless in four league tries.

Strasburg, Gnadenhutten, To Clash In Battle Of Undefeated Tuesday (12-19-55)
The ranks of the unbeaten will be whittled again tomorrow night when two of the area's highly-respected Class B aggregations steal the spotlight by colliding in a Tuscarawas County League contest. Gnadenhutten's rampaging Indians, boasting one of Ohio's longest winning streaks with nine consecutive triumphs without a setback, entertain the equally unsullied Strasburg Tigers who have copped the duke in all seven of their outings thus far. The Tribesmen and the Tigers, the latter defending district champions, are booked to tangle on the Indian hardwood with a capacity crowd expected. Strasburg is tied for the league lead with four circuit victories with the Midvale Blue Devils who are favored to have little trouble in disposing of the Bolivar Cardinals at Bolivar.
*
LEAGUE GAMES
*
Other loop contests send Port Washington to Sugarcreek, while Tuscarawas is at Stone Creek and Dundee appears ast Mineral City in a battle for the cellar position in the league.
*
A COMPARISON
*
The Fracas between Strasburg and Gnadenhutten appears to be a toss-up with comparative scores of three common opponnets aiding little in selecting a favorite. Strasburg, coached by Ken Newlon, has a slight scoring edge over the Tribesmen as the Bengals have averaged 72.1 points in their seven frays as compared to the enemy average of 51 points even. Gnaden, coached by Dick Scott, is averaging 71.6 points for nine games while Indian foes have averaged 50.7. The Strasburg forces have beaten Bolivar 62-44, Dundee 84-50, Tusky 64-42, Dalton 68-61, Mineral City 89-53, Midvale 69-58 and Baltic 76-49 while the Indians have gotten past Freeport 59-57, Tusky 77-60, Warsaw 75-50, Stone Creek 77-62, Dundee 92-23, Dennison 63-47, Baltic 87-60, Port Washington 64-63 and Tusky for a second time 51-45.

How They Stand In County Loop (12-17-55)
Three Players Tally Over 30 points 105-82 (12-17-10)
That Port Washington (2-1) (6-2) and Stone Creek (2-1) (6-3) stage a knock down, drag'em out affair when they collide on the basketball court got more assurance last night. The Purple Riders emerged triumphant over the Creekers for a second time this season on the home planks in a donny-brook that saw three shot-makers sizzle the nets for over 30 points apiece. Defense was ignored in preferance to bombing buckets as the Riders rammed home 38 double-deckers and the Panthers 27. Port built up a bigger edge on a 29-24 advantage at the charity line. The contest started like many others. Port led 19-12 after one period of action, but the cords began to sing in the second heat. Stone Creek remained in contention always, but trailed 43-31 at intermission and 71-58 at the close of quarter No. 3. Tom Jones of the winners got the best out of the individual scoring duel. He dropped in 11 fielders and as many gratis pegs for 33 points, while the promising Nick Frank and Stone Creek's Ronnie Deibel socked in 31 markers apiece. Rod Reinhart of the losers was not far behind on 25. The victory was the sixth for Bray Toot's team while Leo Gower's array has won six. Port made 57 percent of its action shots and the Panthers shot at a 46 percent clip. The Port Washington Reserves (6-1) were back to their winning ways by beating up the Stone Creek Reserves 50-41.

Tuscarawas County B League Games (12-16-10)
In county league bucket-making Strasburg and Midvale will be out to stay in a deadlock for the top rung, while Gnadenhutten and Stone Creek will be trying to keep their records unstained and remain tied for the third slot. Strasburg and Midvale have won three apiece in three games, while Gnaden and Stone Creek have each captured two decisions. Midvale, Baltic, and Gnaden will be meeting second dividion clubs, but Stone Creek may have a big job in stopping Port Washington, which trounced the Panthers 64-49 in an opener at the Creeker gym. The tussle at Port's baillwick will determine the third best overall record of county teams. Stone Creek has won six and lost two, Port stands at five and two. The unbeaten crews, Gnaden and Strasburg, will be shooting for their 9th and 7th victories, respectively.

Bolivar's Cardinals may not be setting the county afire on the basketball court, but today boast the top point-maker in Class B ranks in Ken (Bobo) Haueter. Haueter, one of several juniors on the Card varsity, is leading the race by virtue of a percentage point over Paul Lindsay of Mineral City's Tigers. While Haueter has tallied 145 points in six contests for a 24.1 average, the Mineral City standout is averaging 24 even with 144 markers in as many games. Four other lads from county league teams are averaging at least 20 points per start and three of them are juniors, Ronnie Deibel, the Stone Creek forward, holds down third place with a 22.6 mark followed by Ed Bates of Port Washington with 21.0 and Don Levengood of Dundee with 20.8. Levengood, the only senior among the quartet, has accounted for 125 points in six games, Leggett 147 in seven, Bates 148 in seven and Deibel 181 in eight. Bates, Leggett and Deibel are juniors. Barely under the 20-point mark are Jim Kuecher of Strasburg averaging 19.3 per game and Larry Swinderman of Midvale 19.8. The Strasburg reliable has chalked up 116 points in six frays while Swinderman has canned 139 in seven. Indians Squeeze By Port 64-63 (12-14-55)
IT WAS ALMOST, but not quite for the Purple Riders (1-1) (5-2) of Port Washington last night as they battled the undefeated Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (8-0) to the wire before yielding in the closing seconds of action. Coach Dick Scott's Tribesmen had to come from behind to snare their eighth straight triumph on a desperation heave by Glen Hines in the last three seconds of the thriller played at the Port gym. The setback was the second one-point loss for Coach Bray Toot's Riders who bowed to Midvale 63-62 earlier in the season. They have won five games and the loss snapped a four-game win streak. After Gnadenhutten had taken an 18-14 edge after one period of play, the Riders came back to forge into the lead 33-30 at half time, before the Indians again took over 49-45 at the last break. With a minute to play, the Indians led 62-60 when Nick Frank was fouled hitting from action. He also made good on the free throw and the Riders led 63-61. Larry Biggs sank a foul for Gnaden and, after two jump balls, Hines grabbed the resulting free ball and whipped a baseball-type throw which swished the cords and the Indian victory skein remained intact as the final buzzer sounded. Glen Hines was high scorer for the night with 22 points while Charles Albaugh hit 11 and Charles Miller and Ed Shull each had 10 for the winners. Ed Bates tallied 20 to top Port Washington as Nick Frank tossed in 17 and Tom Jones added 14. The Port Washington Reserves (5-1) lost their first game of the year, losing to the Gnadenhutten Reserves 53-40.

Class B Games In Limelight Tonight (12-13-55)
In the two top Class B battles of the still-infant season the unbeaten Midvale Blue Devils square off against likewise undefeated Strasburg and at Port the Riders of Bray Toot face the unsullied Gnadenhutten Indians. Baltic is at Dundee and Bolivar at Stone Creek.
*
TOUGH TASK
*
The game at Midvale, possibly the most attractive "B" skirmish in the area to date, will find the host Middies in quest of their seventh straight nod and Strasburg seeking No. 6 in a row.
*
TWO MUTUAL FOES
*
The two teams have engaged common foes in Tuscarawas and Dundee. Midvale beat Tuscarawas 80-63 and Dundee 86-36 while the Bengals tamed Tuscarawas 64-50. Midvale has also beaten Augusta, Port Washington, Malvern and Baltic while Strasburg has also claimed Bolivar, Malvern and its Alumni with its only setback being a 63-62 reversal at the hands of Midvale. Bolivar and Stone Creek may also stage a stiff fight at the Creeker hardwoods. Bolivar has been coming along and now has taken two consecutive scalps, but the Cardinals' apparently have their work cut out for them as the Panthers have lost, but twice in seven tries. Baltic (1-5) and Dundee (0-5) pair off at Dundee in a game matching two clubs with the county's poorest records. Mineral City, which has bowed three straight times and has an overall mark of a lone victory in five starts, attempts to rebound at Walnut Creek. The Panthers have lost twice, but have won three, including their last two ventures.
