Two games of the Tuscarawas County Class A Baseball Tournament were played last night although opening date was set for tonight. The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) defeated Sugarcreek (0-1) 10-6 and on their home field will meet Midvale (0-0) next Tuesday. Gnadenhutten (1-0) blasted Tuscarawas Valley (0-1) 19-2 at the Indians' diamond and will meet the winner of the Strasburg-Midvale game on April 22. Coach Dale McDonald's hardballers were never in trouble as they spurted to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when Bob Haswell smashed out a double to drive in three runs, and finally crossing the plate himself. After adding one more run, brother Nick Haswell hit a timely single, and with the aid of an error, five more runs crossed the plate for the Tigers. Sugarcreek broke into the score column in the fourth inning with a pair of runs and added one in the seventh. Bill Gerber and Gene Gerber each hit doubles for Sugarcreek. Sam Jacobs was credited with the victory as he went the distance, fanning six and granting 16 hits. Charlie Stingel was charged with the loss, as he gave up 13 hits and struck out six. The Indians copped their victory on the fine hurling of Tom Frank who allowed only four hits, three singles and a double. Meanwhile, the Tribe batsmen collected 15 hits in posting the victory. Ben Price was charged with the loss. Ed Shull led the victors with a double and triple, while Jerry McKeown, Larry Clark and Tom Roth all had two hits apiece, each getting a double. Dave Wolfe got the only extra base hit for the Trojans. Stone Creek (0-0) is scheduled to meet Baltic (0-0), and Dundee (0-0) is to square off with Port Washington (0-0) in action today.
