Midvale's mauling Blue Devils repeated as the track and field champions of the Class A County school system as they romped to a lopsided victory in the annual Spring Carnival held at Dover's Crater Stadium Saturday. Coach Burt Beaber's powerful Blue Devil's included one new record among their feats as they won eight first places and five second spots to amass 77 1/2 points to easily retain the cinder championship they claimed last spring. Runnersup were the Gnadenhutten Indians with 41 points, while Tuscarawas Valley was third with 29 1/2. Sugarcreek and Strasburg tied for fourth place with 24 points each followed in order by Tuscarawas with eight, Port Washington five, and Baltic one. Midvale also dethroned Tuscarawas as titlists in the grade boys' division by chalking up 21 points to Sugarcreek's 16 1/2, Tuscarawas Valley's 16, Tuscarawas' 14 1/2, Baltic's four and Strasburg's three. Sugarcreek's high school girls won the crown formerly worn by Bolivar by collecting 19 1/2 points to 16 for Strasburg, 12 1/2 for Tuscarawas Valley, eight for Midvale and four for Baltic, while Gnadenhutten's Grade girls won their division with 16 points as Sugarcreek notched 11, Strasburg eight, Tuscarawas five, Tuscarawas Valley four and Baltic one. Although the meet was held up over 30 minutes by a downpour, the Blue Devils waited until the final event of the day to shatter the mile relay record set in 1953 by a previous Midvale quartet. Ignoring the wet track, the Blue Devils relay foursome of Larry Gibbs, Lonnie Fulp, Tom Krocker and Russ Hobart raced the baton around the quarter mile track four times in 3-minutes 50.9 seconds to trim a ful second off the previous mark of 3:51.9 which had stood for four years. Dick Leggett won two blue ribbons and tied with teammate Bill Housel for a third first place finish, while Chuck Colletti was also a dual winner for the champions. Dick Leggett took the low and high hurdles and tied with Bill Housel in the high jump, while Colletti's blue ribbons were achieved in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. The Blue Devils, by virtue of their easy triumph in the county system meet, will be the standard bearers for Tuscarawas County in the Class A division of the Eastern Ohio District meet at Uhrichsville next Saturday. Thus far this school year Midvale athletes have won the Tuscarawas Valley Football Conference title, reign as Northeast Ohio Regional Class A Basketball kingpins, were consolation bracket winners in the County Baseball Tourney, and continue as county track and field champions.
