Ed Bates Sets Two New Records With 50-Point Outburst As Port, Midvale Rome In County Tourney (2-18-57)

With Ed Bates setting two new scoring marks, the Port Washington Purple Riders (13-8) blazed to a rousing 106-74 victory over Baltic's Eagles (14-9) Saturday night in the consolation bracket of the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall. In the other consy battle the Midvale Blue Devils (12-9) romped over Tuscarawas' Broncos (2-19) to the tune of 89-67 for the second victory over that team in the tournament having defeated them in championship play. Ed Bates, who scored 446 points in 18 regular season games for the Riders, continued to set a torried pace in tourney play, but topped both of his previous efforts Saturday night as he tallied an amazing 50 points. The 6-1 senior lad sizzled the entire night as he hit from every position on the floor and connected on 21 of 39 action shots. He also added eight foul shots in as many tries in registering the staggering total. The half century of points snaps two scoring records - one of 43 points in tourney play and the other the Memorial Hall record of 44 points. Jerry (Goose) Von Daenel of Strasburg set the tourney record in 1955 against Midvale, while the Memorial Hall mark was held by Dover's Jake Lengler who scored 44 points in his junior year of the 1950-1951 season against Coshocton. Ed Bates scored 28 points against Dundee and 32 against Tuscarawas Valley in two previous tourney contests last week, and with his 50 Saturday night, brings his total to 110 or better than 36 per tourney game. He could easily set a new mark of the most points scored in the entire county tournament as he is assured of at least one more game. Saturday night's action concluded the fourth round of contest in the tourney with the semi-finals and finals the only remaining games. Thursday night finalists in the championship bracket, and the other two teams in the consy bracket, will be decided when Strasburg's Tigers (18-1) battle the Panthers of Stone Creek (17-4) in the first game and Gnadenhutten's Indians (18-3) square off with the Trojans of Tuscarawas Valley (16-4) in the nightcap. The loser of the first game will meet Midvale, while the second game loser takes on Port on Friday night, while the championship tussles are on Saturday.
