Troyer Heads High School Athletic Group (9-13-57)

At a recent meeting of the Tuscarawas County Athletic Association the following officers were elected: President, Supt. Clarence Troyer of Baltic; vice president, Supt. M.R. Helwick of Strasburg, and secretary, Supt. C.M. Zimmerman of Sugarcreek-Shanesville. In preparing plans for county sports events this year, Mr. Troyer was delegated as manager of the Baseball League and Spring tournament. Supt. Joseph Carlisle of Warwick Local School District was appointed to again manage the county track meet next May 9. County Supt. W.E. Laws, was retained as manager of the Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament, at Memorial Hall, here February 13, 15, 20 and 22. Some changes are under way in the handling of both the track meet and the basketball tournament. The preliminary hosts of the track meet will be held during the afternoon, beginning at 2:30. And the final run-offs will be scheduled that evening under the lights, making it possible for a greater number of spectators to attend. The consolation games of the county basketball tournament have been dropped, largely because of the decline in number of schools participating. Owing to the closing of Dundee High, Tuscarawas County can now send only two teams in the sectional tournament.

Port Washington Schools hire W.W. Gephart (8-9-57)

Woodrow W. Gephart of Dover was hired as executive head of the Salem-Washington school district at Port Washington last night to succeed Jerry M. Baird when the school board met. Supt. Baird resigned to accept a similar position at Junction City. After graduating from Dover in 1938, where he was an outstanding track athlete, Gephart attended Muskingum College and received his bachelor of science degree in 1942. His schooling was temporarily intorrupted by a three-year hitch in the Navy and upon his discharge in 1946, he accepted a position as teacher and coach at Frazeysburg until 1952. He then enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh from where he received his master's degree in 1953. He has completed all his requirements for a doctor's degree with the exception of a dissertation which he hopes to complete in the near future. After three years as executive head of the Wayne and Greentown local schools from 1952 through 1955, he was a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh until accepting the position with the Salem-Washington school district. He is married to the former Martha Huebner of Gnadenhutten and they have two children. They plan to reside in Gnadenhutten.

Jerry M. Baird, 51, superintendent of Port Washington schools for 12 years, presented his resignation to the board of education there last night and will take a position as superintendent of Junction City-Jackson local school district on August 1. The Junction City district is about twice as large as the Port Washington district and Mr. Baird will receive a considerable increase in salary. Jerry Baird has spent a total of 18 years at Port Washington. He began teaching there in 1937 and went to Gnadenhutten schools in 1942 for two years as a science teacher. He returned to Port in 1944 and taught one year before becoming superintendent. During his service, Washington Township has been consolidated into the Port District and a new township school was erected. Mr. and Mrs. Baird will move to Junction City in the near future. They have two children, Mrs. Robert Gaynor and Dean Baird, both of New Philadelphia. Mrs. Baird is a former Republican member of the Board of Elections. No action has been taken by the Port board toward naming Mr. Baird's successor.

Midvale Reigns As Track Kings In County Meet (5-13-57)

Midvale's mauling Blue Devils repeated as the track and field champions of the Class A County school system as they romped to a lopsided victory in the annual Spring Carnival held at Dover's Crater Stadium Saturday. Coach Burt Beaber's powerful Blue Devil's included one new record among their feats as they won eight first places and five second spots to amass 77 1/2 points to easily retain the cinder championship they claimed last spring. Runnersup were the Gnadenhutten Indians with 41 points, while Tuscarawas Valley was third with 29 1/2. Sugarcreek and Strasburg tied for fourth place with 24 points each followed in order by Tuscarawas with eight, Port Washington five, and Baltic one. Midvale also dethroned Tuscarawas as titlists in the grade boys' division by chalking up 21 points to Sugarcreek's 16 1/2, Tuscarawas Valley's 16, Tuscarawas' 14 1/2, Baltic's four and Strasburg's three. Sugarcreek's high school girls won the crown formerly worn by Bolivar by collecting 19 1/2 points to 16 for Strasburg, 12 1/2 for Tuscarawas Valley, eight for Midvale and four for Baltic, while Gnadenhutten's Grade girls won their division with 16 points as Sugarcreek notched 11, Strasburg eight, Tuscarawas five, Tuscarawas Valley four and Baltic one. Although the meet was held up over 30 minutes by a downpour, the Blue Devils waited until the final event of the day to shatter the mile relay record set in 1953 by a previous Midvale quartet. Ignoring the wet track, the Blue Devils relay foursome of Larry Gibbs, Lonnie Fulp, Tom Krocker and Russ Hobart raced the baton around the quarter mile track four times in 3-minutes 50.9 seconds to trim a ful second off the previous mark of 3:51.9 which had stood for four years. Dick Leggett won two blue ribbons and tied with teammate Bill Housel for a third first place finish, while Chuck Colletti was also a dual winner for the champions. Dick Leggett took the low and high hurdles and tied with Bill Housel in the high jump, while Colletti's blue ribbons were achieved in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. The Blue Devils, by virtue of their easy triumph in the county system meet, will be the standard bearers for Tuscarawas County in the Class A division of the Eastern Ohio District meet at Uhrichsville next Saturday. Thus far this school year Midvale athletes have won the Tuscarawas Valley Football Conference title, reign as Northeast Ohio Regional Class A Basketball kingpins, were consolation bracket winners in the County Baseball Tourney, and continue as county track and field champions.

4 County Cagers Receive Honors On INS All-Ohio (3-13-57)

Four Tuscarawas County basketball players, received special honors today. Ronnie Deibel of Stone Creek and Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten were selected to the second team international News Service All-Ohio Class A Basketball team for the 1956-1957 season. Jerry Froman of Strasburg and Ed Bates of Port Washington were named to the honorable mention list. Ronnie Deibel, who set a new four-year scoring record this year, led the Panthers to one of their best seasons in the school's history. Deibel, a 5-11 senior, scored 399 points during the regular season and tallied 120 more in the county and sectional tournaments. This brought his four-year total to 1905 points. The mark snapped the old record of 1792 points held by Jim Lorenz, a former Stone Creek player and set in the 1951-1952 campaign. Eldon Miller, a 5-11 senior, led the Indians to the county championship, through the sectional and finally lost out in the finals of the district tourney to Midvale. The Tribe posted a record of 23 victories and only four setbacks. Jerry Froman, a 6-0 senior, was the stalwart on the Strasburg team this year which went through the regular season undefeated in county league competition and posted a 17-1 season record. The Tigers were eliminated from the county tourney and finished with a record of 19 wins and only three losses. Ed Bates was the high-scorer during the regular season in the county league with 446 points. Port Washington was also knocked out of action in the county tourney in the semi-finals of the consolation bracket. He ended the season with 582 points. The first team members were Bob Filiere of Troy-Luckey, Jerry Delong of Sidney Holy Angels, Jim Opperman of New Bremen, Larry Kruger of Allensville and Danny Kizer of Concord. The second team, beside Miller and Deibel, included Paul Fike of New Washington, Paul Hoffman of St. Paris and Marvin Engle of Arcanum.

Panthers, Trojans Bow Out Of Limelight (2-25-57)

Photo: MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten was chosen the most valuable player of the 1956-1957 season in the county league. He was named for the honors by individual voting of the coaches of the circuit. He received the trophy Saturday night during the intermission of the championship game between Stone Creek and Gnaden.
*
Stone Creek and Tuscarawas Valley cagers Saturday night bowed out of the limelight in the finals of the 35th Annual Tuscarawas County Class A Tournament. And by virtue of the whistle, Gnadenhutten's "rampaging" Indians took a 75-66 verdict over Stone Creek for their fourth tournament championship, and first since way back in 1943. Midvale's Blue Devils cut loose in the consolation fracas and blasted Tuscarawas Valley 96-58 to notch its fourth consolation title in the long series, and kept the Trojans from copping any tourney honors in their first year of action. A special award should go to the Panthers of Coach Ed McGlumphy although they did not win the championship as they probably displayed one of the greatest comebacks ever at the tourney only to be thwarted at the foul line and by an outstanding player by the name of Eldon Miller. Eldon Miller lived up to expectations Saturday night as he led his team to the victory after being awarded the Most Valuable Player Award donated by The Daily Times at the half time ceremonies between the championship game amid many other presentations. Jerry Froman captain of the Strasburg Tigers accepted the league championship trophy also donated by the above paper, while the consolation trophy was awarded to Dave DeMattio and Gary Haney of Midvale donated by Miller and Klinker Inc. of Dover. The 11 players elected to The Daily Reporter's All-County team received trophies. Those named to the team were Ronnie Deibel and Rod Reinhart of Stone Creek, Ben Price and Ken Haueter of Tuscarawas Valley, Jerry Froman and Chuck Burris of Strasburg, Dick Leggett and John Colombo of Midvale Glen Reidenbach of Baltic, Ed Bates of Port Washington and Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten. Gnadenhutten was the recipient of the tourney trophy donated by The Daily Reporter following the championship event, while the runner-up trophy, donated by the City Auto Co. of New Philadenphia, was awarded to Stone Creek. Gold basketballs donated by Marsh Wall Products of Dover and Fairfield Brick of Zoarville and Silver Ovals donated by Stone Creek Brick Co. were awarded to the members of the champs and runner-up, respectively. Gnaden also received the game ball which was donated by Godfrey Electric of Dover. Tuscarawas Valley's cheerleaders were awarded a trophy for being the best yell team. Those receiving the trophy donated by Schwartz's Smart Apparel of Dover were Judy Kirker, Mary Jane Ladrach, Kaye Kahler, Peggy Mathey, Pat Ickes and Carol Davidson. The Trojan junior high basketball team, which went undefeated in eight league games, was presented a trophy.

All-County Team Has Everything (2-23-57)

What would you want in a dream basketball team? Over-all height, good speed, dead-eye shooting, defensive ability, abounding competitive spirit and, above all, plain love of the game? That's exactly what the 1956-1957 Class A All-County Basketball League team has this year. Usually 10 boys, but 11 this year because of a tie, the team was selected for The Daily Reporter by the coaches of league schools. The mentors first voted for the top 20 players on a preliminary ballot and then made a final choice from the nominee list. The team is comprised of eight seniors, two juniors and only one sophomore. It averages approximately 6-feet in height and in an aggregate 207 games the 11 "dream team" members sizzled the nets for 3,749 points or 18.1 markers a game per player during the regular season. Seven schools are represented on the team with Stone Creek, Strasburg, Tuscarawas Valley and Midvale each placing two players. Baltic, Gnadenhutten and Port Washington had one player each. Those boys named to the dream team were Ronnie Deibel and Rod Reinhart of Stone Creek, Jerry Froman and Chuck Burris of Strasburg, Ben Price and Ken Haueter of Tuscarawas Valley, Dick Leggett and John Colombo of Midvale, Glen Reidenbach of Baltic, Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten and Ed Bates of Port Washington. Only three boys, Ronnie Deibel, Jerry Froman and Eldon Miller were unanimous choices of all 10 coaches. Ronnie Deibel and Jerry Froman, along with Ed Bates and Dick Leggett are repeaters from last year. Ronnie Deibel joined the select few who have made the team three consecutive years. He was named in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Ben Price is the only sophomore on the team, while Rod Reinhart and Chuck Burris are the two juniors. Ben Price received honorable mention last year as a freshman, while Rod Reinhart also was on the "mention" list. Ken Haueter was picked on the honorable mention list last year and this year just barely missed being a unanimous choice as did John Colombo and Dick Leggett. Glen Reindenbach, smallest member on the team at 5-5, along with Eldon Miller, did not receive any recognition last year as juniors. But, this year Eldon Miller was a number one choice and Glen Reidenbach was one of the top vote getters. Ed Bates leads in scoring among the All-County team with 446 points during 18 regular season games for a 24.7 average. In four tournament games the sharp-shooting lad has tallied 136 points to bring his total to 582 for better than 26 points per contest. Eldon Miller follows Ed Bates with 413 points in 20 regular season games for a 20.9 average, while John Colombo tallied 360 in 18 games for a 20 point clip. Ronnie Deibel netted 399 in 20 tilts for 19.9 and Jerry Froman 356 in 18 contests for 19.7. Ed Bates set two new marks in the third game of the present tourney with a 50-point spree. He broke the old tourney record of 43 points held by Jerry Von Kaenel of Strasburg and 44 markers that was the Memorial Hall floor record held by Jake Lengler of Dover High. Ronnie Deibel, although experiencing a slump during the season, set a new 4-year scoring mark. He has tallied 1851 points thus far in four years, snapping the old mark of 1792 set by Jim Jones, also of Stone Creek, in 1952, when the Panthers won the county tournament for the first time. Ben Price is the tallest man on the team at 6-3 and is one of the better rebounders although teammate Ken Haueter, 6-1, has been labeled as the top board man in the league as he, many times, out-jumped players two, and three inches taller than him. Ed Bates is also known as a dangerous man under the boards. He handles his 6-2 frame with amazing ability in snatching loose ovals, while Chuck Burris and Jerry Froman also display uncanny ability in getting good rebound position, although they are only 6-1 and 6-0, respectively. Play-makers? The team has them. Rod Reinhart, labeled by many as a "ball-hawk" and Rod Reidenbach, one of the best ball handlers in the loop, could do a better than ample job as the sparkplugs of the team. Dick Leggett and Ronnie Deibel, although very fine shooters, are also outstanding on drive-ins. Dick Leggett was noted throughout the season for stealing the ball and making many easy layups. Eldon Miller could also be added in the driving group as he led his fast-breaking team all year and tallied many of his points by beating the defense down the floor or getting the jump on his opponent. Pivot men are also abundant on the squad as Ben Price, John Colombo, Ken Haueter and Chuck Burris all move very well in the key and are adept in the art of hooking and shooting fade-away jump shots.

Trojans Stage Comeback 73-66 (2-23-57)

The Trojans of Tuscarawas Valley (18-5), behind 11 points at the end of the initial period, unleased a big second quarter to pull ahead by half time and then held on for the victory. The winners trailed 26-15 at the end of the first quarter, but the jump-shooting of Ken (BoBo) Haueter and the hook shots of Sophomore Ben Price whittled the lead in the second period until the score was knotted 32-32. Then Wayne Ruof tallied a fielder with only five seconds remaining to put the Trojans ahead 34-32 at half time - they remained ahead the rest of the game, although Port Washington (13-9) made a game bid in the final period. With Ken Haueter and Ben Price taking turns scoring, Tusky Valley rolled out to a 50-44 lead by the end of the third stanza and soon lengthened its lead early in the fourth period. Both teams went on scoring sprees the final stanza with each netting their biggest out-put in any quarter of the contest. The winners out-scored Port though and at one time led by 11 points only to have the margin whittled by the Riders accurate foul shooting. Three-way scoring by Wayne Ruof, Ben Price and Ken Haueter in the final quarter were the deciding factors, while the fine rebounding of the two big boys and floor play of Raymond McFeeders and Wayne Ruof contributed to the victory. Ken Haueter ended the contest with 24 points, while Ben Price had 21 and Wayne Ruof 16. Ed Bates, hampered with fouls in the third quarter, took scoring honors with 26 markers, while Nick Frank and Denver Glazer each potted 14 apiece. Thus, Port Washington, heavy favorites to win the league and tourney championship ended the season with a mediocre 13-9 record.

Stone Creek, Gnaden Will Vie For Honors (2-23-57)

After tonight either Stone Creek's Panthers (18-4) will have wrapped up their second Class A County League Tournament title or Gnadenhutten's Indians (19-3) will have notched their fourth in the 35-year series of the dribble derby. The two teams will square off at 8:45PM, this evening for the crown at Memorial Hall with an anticipated record-breaking crowd. Meanwhile Midvale's suprising Blue Devils (13-9) take on the newly consolidated Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (17-5) in the preliminary contest at 7:30PM for the consolation title and the third berth in the Class A Sectional to be staged at Memorial Hall starting next Wednesday night. The Blue Devils gained the finals berth in the consy bracket by snaring a sweet 62-54 revenge victory from the Strasburg Tigers. The loss eliminated the Bengals of Coach Chuck Caniford from the tournament. The absence of Strasburg in the finals of the tourney in either the championship or consy brackets will be the first time in five years. In the past four years the Tigers were champs once, runner-up twice and consolation champs on the fourth occasion. Tuscarawas Valley came from behind to hand the Port Washington Purple Riders (13-8) a 73-66 set back to earn a berth opposite Midvale. The two teams met on November 21 at the Blue Devils court in regular season play and the Trojans of Coach Ray Low walked off with a thrilling 74-73 verdict. Gnadenhutten, victor over Stone Creek by scores of 60-46 and 86-68, won its last tourney crown in 1943, defeating Bolivar for the title. Stone Creek, on the other hand, has won only one county tourney crown and has never been runnerup or consolation winner. So this is the second time the Panthers of Coach Ed McGlumphy has ever been in the finals of either bracket.

Midvale Shocks Strasburg (2-23-57)

Stone Creek Rips Strasburg 69-52 In Tourney Upset (2-22-57)

Stone Creek 69, Strasburg 52! The roof almost came off bulging Memorial Hall here last night as the Panthers turned giant killers and scored the biggest upset this basketball season to gain the finals of the Class A tournament. Stone Creek (18-4) will bid for the coveted crown Saturday night when it meets Gnadenhutten (19-3), which edged Tuscarawas Valley (16-5) 79-75 in the other game last night. As the partisan fans in the jam-packed hall roared them on, the clawing Panthers, coached by Edwin McGlumphy, did what all other county teams failed to this year - trim the Tigers. Strasburg (18-2), ranked third among the state's Class A schools, had lost only to Sandy Valley prior to last night. Stone Creek had bowed to Strasburg 62-52 during the regular season and that made last night's 17-point triumph all the sweeter. The Panthers won their first county tournament title in 1952 against Baltic when they were coached by Ken Newlon, who later was at the Strasburg helm three years before going to Canton Lincoln. This is the first year at the Panther helm for McGlumphy. During the regular season, Stone Creek bowed to Gnadenhutten 80-46 and 81-63, but the Panthers, on the basis of their great performance last night, will be difficult to stop. Gnadenhutten, on the other hand, was given a real scare before conquering Tuscarawas Valley's Trojans in the closing minutes of their contest. As a result of their victories, Stone Creek and Gnadenhutten qualified for the sectional tournament opening here March 6. The third berth in the sectional will be decided tomorrow night at 7:30. Strasburg, beaten only by Sandy Valley prior to last night's setback, tangles with Midvale (12-9) at 7:30 tonight in the consolation semi-finals. The 8:45 contest will send Port Washington (13-8) against Tuscarawas Valley (17-5).
