Midvale and Hiland were top seeded drawing byes and automatic berths in the finals, when drawings for the Class "A" Sectionial tournament slated Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights in Memorial Hall were held at Heimkamp's Restaurant Sunday. The Blue Devils were top seeded with a 19-1 record and drew into the lower bracket, while Hiland, tournament and league champion of Holmes County, took the upper bracket bye in the 6 team field. Tuscarawas Valley (19-2) runnerup to Midvale in Tuscarawas County league and tournament play, will battle Dennison St. Mary's, winner of the recent exempted tourney, in the meet opener tomorrow night at 7:30, with the winner to play Hiland Friday night at 8 for a berth in the Dover district next week. Colliding in the second game tomorrow night will be Killbuck and Malvern. The Bucks were runnerups to Hiland in league and tourney competition, while the Hornets are Carroll County's representative, having bested Augusta 42-39 Saturday night. They clash at 8:45 with the winner to take on Midvale Saturday night at 8 for the other district trip. Several motions were made yesterday on whether to seed two or four teams - keeping the representatives of Holmes and Tuscarawas County in separate brackets. The 2-team seed was finally decided upon and in the free draw between the other four squads Tusky Valley drew the No. 1 pill, picking Game 1. Killbuck was next and went into Game 4 of the lower bracket. St. Mary's followed and chose to meet Tusky Valley. Malvern had no alternative but to go opposite Killbuck. TUSKY VALLEY'S RECORD WAS RECOGNIZED AS 18-2 when the district board recommended that alumni games not be counted in overall records. Records of other teams in the tourney are Killbuck 16-4, Hiland 19-2, Malvern 4-14 and St. Mary's 13-5. Tickets will be sold at the gate with adults being charged $1 and students 50 cents. Doors will open one hour prior to game time.

Midvale qualified as county tournament champion by upending Tusky Valley 65-43 in the final of the 37th Annual event last Saturday night at Memorial Hall. It was Midvale's second win of the season over the Trojans, having taken an earlier 81-56 triumph in regular-season play. Midvale (19-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead at the outset and Tusky Valley (19-2) countered to tie the score - the last time it was ever close to the driver's seat. The Blue Devils raced to a 12-8 lead at the end of the first period and then left the floor at intermission with a very comfortable 33-14 margin. Tusky Valley made a valiant bid to get back in the game in the third period, but it was too late. The damage had been done. The Trojans scored 16 points, but the red hot Devils tallied 18. The Trojan's outburst was more than their total point output in the first half. Exhibiting an explosive punch, Midvale fired the cords for 48.2 percent by connecting 26 times in 54 tries. It may have been the Midvale defense or the fact that the Trojans didn't have the staying power with their tourney-hardeded opposition. Whatever it was, the Trojans just didn't see eye to eye with the Memorial Hall hoops. They took 59 shots and made only 17 for 28.8 percent. Midvale was successful on 13 of 25 tries at the charity line, while the Trojans canned 9 of 18. Once again the Blue Devils exhibited a balanced point punch. Ron Breniser led the way with 23, while Bill Housel added 15 and Tom Belknap 11. Ben Price was high for the losers with 13 and Ron Lake followed with 12.
