Action, highlighted by a no-hit, no-run game, was hot and heavy in the quarter-final round of the Tuscarawas County baseball tournament yesterday. Results saw Tuscarawas Valley blank Baltic 3-0, Garaway down Port Washington 11-7 and Strasburg rolled past Gnadenhutten 20-7. All three winners go in semi-final play Friday at sites yet to be determined. The card lines up with Tusky Valley vs Garaway and Strasburg vs Tuscarawas. The two semi victors automatically qualify for the Sectional meet at Sugarcreek, but will battle for the County title next Tuesday.

Tusky Valley's Chuck Locker was the outstanding individual of the day when he set Baltic down without a hit in a near perfect contest. He faced only 24 men, whiffing 9 and walking 5. The Trojans scored their initial run on a single by Clarence Cantrill, a stolen base and another single by Ben Price. In the fourth Locker reached base on an error and scored when Cantrill belted a triple, two singles, a base on balls and a sacrifice brought in the third maker. Cantrill was the top batsman for the winners with three for four, including the triple. Losing moundsman John Rice struck out 10 and walked two while permitting eight hits.

Veteran hurler Charles Stingel took the victory for Garaway when he struck out 10, walked five and permitted eight hits. Jim Bender toiled for Port Washington, giving up eight hits, striking out nine, but walking eight. Garaway's big inning was the fifth when Stingel and Russ Kohler tripled. Koran Zehnder singled and Bender gave three free passes. Bill Phillips, although only 5-5, was the big hitter for Port Washington with three singles in four trips, while John Landon doubled and singled. Garrett Ray had two for four for the victors.

Strasburg handled defending County Champion Gnadenhutten, which went all the way to the State finals last season. The Indians ran into an accute case of fumbleites. They committed eight miscues and 13 walks gave Strasburg a big advantage. Jim Clymer opened on the mound for the winners, but was tagged for four runs in the first inning and had the bases loaded with one out in the second when Don Warnes came in to put out the fire. Warnes went the remainder of the distance, walking four and whiffing seven. Gnadenhutten hurler Ed Struchen was touched for seven hits, while fanning five and walking 13. Nick Haswell was top batter for the victors with three for five, including a double, while Bob Hall connected for two singles in five tries and Clymer also went two for five. Failure to field bunts properly provided the downfall for the defending champs.
