Tuscarawas County's best two defensive basketball teams during regular-season activity will seek to outdo the other tonight when the Class "A" Sectional Tournament warfare opens in Memorial Hall. Dennison St. Mary's which limited its opposition to 47.2 points a game in winning 11 of 16 contests, will do battle at 7:30 against Tuscarawas Valley, which averaged 48.6 in a 17-1 season mark. It will mark the only meeting of Tuscarawas' County rivals in sectional play. St. Mary's, which qualified for sectional action from the exempted village-parochial meet at Dennison, now has a 13-5 record and lowered its defensive mark to 46.7. Tusky Valley, beaten by Midvale in last Saturday night's windup to the 37th Annual County Tournament, has an 18-2 won-lost slate and a 49.2 defensive mark. It will be the opener of a two-game program tonight. In The 8:45PM nightcap, Killbuck (16-4) of Holmes County collides with Malvern (4-14), Carroll County winner. The Tusky Valley-St. Mary's winner will return to action Friday night at 8 against Hiland (19-2), Holmes County kingpin. Midvale (19-1) awaits the Killbuck-Malvern victory for a Saturday night fracas. Friday and Saturday night winners will advance to District competition.

Tuscarawas Valley and St. Mary's will be about even in height. The Trojans' Ben Price, who was named the most valuable player for his play in the County "A" League this season, will lead his squad into the sectional. He has scored 432 points and will be the tallest man on the floor at 6-5. Roy Buchanan (6-1) is the second leading scorer with 271 points, while Clarence Cantrill and Ron Lake have tallied 169 and 156, respectively. Buchanan and Price will be at the forwards, while Cantrill and Lake will start at guards. Jerry Pullins (5-8) will probably jump center. Leading the way for St. Mary's will be Paul Smolak (6-2), Sandy Bonvechio (5-8) and Ken Beamer (5-10). They lead the Wave point-making machine with 242, 234 and 231 totals, respectively. It is one of the best balanced scoring attacks in the county. The Waves are expected to open with Smolak and Beamer at the forwards, Bonvechio and Dick Donohue (5-8) at the guards and Joe Franz (6-4) will be at center.

Killbuck has taken a back seat to Hiland in both Holmes league and tournament competition where they were runnerups this season. The Bucks are not tall, but neither is Malvern. Jerry Allison (5-11) is Killbuck's point leader, averaging 17 points a game. Starters are Tom Taylor (6-2) center, Gary Croskey and Dave Christopher both 5-8 guards and Roger McDowell (6-0) and Allison forwards. Malvern is the weak link of the tourney. Numbered among its victims is Dover St. Joseph's. Coach Jack Street plans to start Rick Sarbach (6-2) at center, Curlen Andrews and Tom Romano at forwards and Jim Gause (5-10) and Bob Leggett (5-9) at the guards.
