Tuscarawas Valley And Killbuck, both of whom qualified for last night's opening round of the Class "A" Sectional Basketball Tournament here as runners-up from their respective county meets, are on the move again. Their victories last night assured an All-Tuscarawas and Holmes County cast for weekend final encounters. Tusky Valley whipped Dennison St. Mary's, another Tuscarawas entrant, 62-42, while Killbuck (Holmes County) eliminated Malvern of Carroll County 87-55. Tusky Valley will move into play Friday night against highly-rated Hiland, Holmes County league and tournament champion. Tuscarawas County's league and tournament titlist, Midvale, will provide the opposition for Killbuck Saturday night. The two winners will advance into the Class "A" District tournament also scheduled in Memorial Hall March 2-3-6. The District field will be completed with two qualifiers from the Brilliant Sectional which includes teams from Belmont, Harrison and Jefferson Counties. Tusky Valley's victory last night was its 19th as against two losses to Midvale. Killbuck now has a 17-4 record. Three of the setbacks have been inflicted by Hiland. While it would appear that both of last night's victors had an easy time of it, they didn't - at least for a while. Tusky Valley found Dennison St. Mary's a stubborn customer until late in the third period. Malvern kept in close pursit of Killbuck until midway in the second quarter.

Coach Paul Drotovich's Dennison quintet was behind only 37-32 with three minutes to go in the third quarter before Tusky Valley started to pull away. From there on in, it was the Trojans all the way. It was a real good battle in the opening quarter. The score was knotted at 2-2, 4-4 and 6-6 before Tusky Valley took the lead on a follow-up by Jim Studer. The Trojans increased the lead to 13-9 late in the period before St. Mary's struck back on two fouls by Ken Breamer and two quick baskets by Sandy Bonvechio to nab a 15-13 quarter margin. Roy Buchanan kotted the count for Tusky Valley at the outset of the second period and Ben Price of Tusky and Beamer exchanged baskets for still another deadlock. Buchanan broke the tie with a goal and then Price banged in three straight shots as the Trojans surged to a 31-19 halftime margin. The Blue Waves fought back once again in the third period. Baskets by Breamer, Scotty LeMonte and Joe Franz, plus charity tosses by Paul Smolak and Franz, narrowed the deficit to 33-27. After Studer had connected for Tusky, Mike Dorsey hit on a 3-point play for St. Mary's to narrow the count to 35-30. Studer and Dorsey exchanged baskets and then the Trojans went to town, leading 43-32 at the three-quarter close. Price finished as the game's top scorer with 20 points and he received valuable support from Studer with 15. Buchanan with 13 and Clarence Cantrill with 10. Price, despite the fact he led the point parade, didn't have a good night offensively. His percentage was far below par. Price did yeoman's work; however, around the backboards - as did all of the Trojans, even diminutive Ron Lake. Buchanan turned in a stellar defensive performance, hounding high-scoring Paul Smolak of the Blue Waves throughout the game. Smolak finished with 7 points. Bonvechio paced the Blue Waves with 13 points and Beamer added 12, but the former was one of the most polished performers on the court. Although only a Sophomore, Bonvechio would be a welcome addition to almost any team in the area. Tusky Valley pitched 77 times and hit on 25 for 33.8 percent. The Trojans meshed 10 of 18 at the foul line. St. Mary's connected on 17 of 54 for 31.5 percent and 8 of 15 charity heaves.

Malvern elected to try a control-type game against Killbuck in the early stages and it resulted in the Hornet's only lead of the game - a basket by Curlen Andrews. Killbuck raced to an 18-10 first quarter lead before Malvern battled back to a 24-20 deficit early in the second period. The Bucks poured on the steam once again to gain a 38-25 margin at halftime and a 59-38 advantage at the three-quarter mark. The Holmes County squad, all of whom are adept at the one-hand jump shot, hit on 47.4 percent of their shots. They hit 36 of 76 tries. Malvern wasn't far off the pace, meshing 24-54 efforts for 44.4 percent. The Bucks' leaders are Jerry Allison and Tom Taylor. Allison hit for 22 points in three quarters of activity and Taylor threw in 25 for about 26 minutes work. Gary Croskey and Bill Norris had 10 each. Andrews had 14 points during the first half and finished with 19 to pace Malvern. Bob Leggett, who once he shot found he could hit with regularity, was runner-up with 16 and Tom Romano, who fouled out early in the last period, had 15.

What the future has in store for Tuscarawas Valley and Killbuck won't be known until this weekend. Dennison St. Mary's and Malvern performers can now settle back to classroom work. St. Mary's concluded its season with a 13-6 record, while Malvern closed with a 4-15 mark.
