Tuscarawas and Holmes counties were pinning their hopes on one team apiece to share honors in the Class "A" Sectional District Baseball Tournament at Sugarcreek. Yesterday's first-round battling saw Malvern eliminate Tuscarawas County runner-up Tuscarawas 6-0, while Hiland took it on the chin 7-4 from West Lafayette of Coshocton County. Big Prairie-Lakeville of Holmes County and Warsaw of Coshocton County will clash tomorrow at 2:30 with the winner to battle Tuscasrawas County Champion Garaway next Monday at 3. Malvern and West Lafayette meet Monday at 1.

Tom Romano hurled the Malvern victory, permitting one hit, a double by Chuck McCahill in the second inning. He fanned 14 and walked only three. Charged with the loss was Tusky's Dick Robinson. He yielded four hits, whiffed 13 and walked four. Tom Andrews homered for the winners in the second with one man on, while Romano aided his cause in the fourth with a solo blast. Brother Ron tripled with one on in the same inning.

Stan Yoder, who was relieved by Linus Miller in the sixth inning, was charged with the loss for Hiland. He struck out four, issued five free passes and permitted 10 hits. Tolling for the winners was Dick Brown. He was touched for eight hits. Hiland had a 4-3 lead going into the sixth inning, but West Lafayette put together a double, three singles and a walk for four runs and the victory. Ed Mizer and Herb McElfresh smacked doubles for the winners, while Terry Hershberger had a triple for the losers.
