60 - County Cage Event Moves To Dennison (6-25-59)

Memorial Hall will be abandoned next year by the County Class "A" Basketball Tournament in favor of Dennison High School. The Dennison gymnasium was chosen in a unanimous move by county school heads yesterday morning over New Philadelphia's night fee charged at Dennison. The New Philadelphia Board of Education was asking $150 per night for rental of its new gym, twice as much as the $75 per night fee charged at Dennison. In considering a change of sites from Memorial Hall, which had been used the last 10 years, county heads decided that the New Philadelphia rate was too high, in view of the fact that only $110 per night is charged at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse. Before discussing rental fees, the new gym had been favored because of its centralized location. The county event was last held at Dennison in 1949. In announcing the move county Supt. W.E. Laws said that the main reason for the move from Memorial Hall was floor size which did not amply prepare schools for higher tourneys where games are played on floors much larger. The 1960 tourney will run February 19, 20, 26 and 27.
