MIDVALE (22-1) VS NORTHWESTERN (23-2) - If Midvale's Blue Devils hope to go any farther on the scholastic basketball tournament trail, they'll have to beat the best the state had to offer last year. Northwestern's defending Class "A" Champion Huskies will be the Devils' first test in Regional Tournament competition Friday night at 7 in Canton's Memorial Fieldhouse. Old Washington (27-1), which defeated Conotton Valley 92-68 last Saturday night in the Dover-Marietta District Tournament "runner-up" clash at Dennison, will meet Braceville (25-2) in the Friday nightcap at 8:30. The two winners will return to action Saturday night at 8 for a berth in the Ohio Championship windup at Columbus March 20-21. Northwestern, rated No. 1 in this year's final Associated Press schoolboy poll, is intent on duplicating its 1958 accomplishments. The Huskies, who racked up 27 straight victories a year ago en route to the Ohio crown, have lost only two of 25 starts this year. Midvale is the lone returnee from the field which made up the Canton meet two seasons ago when it went to the State semi-finals, while Northwestern is the only member of last year's teams to regain the Regional. The other two squads are newcomers to regional tournament play, this being their first trips to the "Sweet 16" group in the history of their schools.

A draw to the line was agreed upon by the coaches rather than hold a preliminary draw which would determine the position they would pull the pills. Dan Baker, coach of the defending State Champs, was given the privilege of first draw and drew No. 1, Midvale followed, drawing No. 2 out of the hat to place opposite the Huskies for the tourney opener. Admission for the game is 75 cents for students, $1 general admission and $1.50 for reserved seats. Midvale Supt. Joe Zack placed on sale today 500 of each of the tickets at the high school for all persons living within the Midvale school district. Tomorrow morning the remaining ducats will be placed on sale for the general public and it will continue until 4PM.

Northwestern advanced into Regional play last Saturday night at Canton by lacing the state's seventh-ranked quintet, United Local, 79-44. The Huskies' lost only to two Class "AA" schools - Waynedale and Rittman - during the regular season. Braceville qualified for Regional competition from the Canton District event, dumping Columbana 76-61. Midvale waded into the Canton event by whipping Conotton Valley 96-79 in the Dover District windup last Friday night. Old Washington, which had a 26-game victory streak snapped by Maysville in the Marietta District final Friday night, had little trouble in climbing back into contention at Dennison Friday night.
