Midvale will pin its hope on a depth-laden team to repeat as Class "A" District Scholastic Track Champion Saturday at Bellaire. The Devils showed that depth last Saturday before 250 fans when they rolled to their third straight Tuscarawas County track title at Crater Stadium, amassing 91 points. Tusky Valley, which took its share of blue ribbons, but failed to come up with enough 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths, was the only other team in contention, totaling 81 points. From there the field dropped to 15 each compiled by Gnadenhutten and Strasburg, 13 by Port Washington, and 8 by Garaway. For the first year the grade boys went through a full slate of events, 13 in all, with Garaway emerging as king with 41 1/2 points to edge Tuscarawas with 40 3/4. Midvale was third with 35 1/4, Ragerville had 34 1/4, Gnaden 18 1/2, Strasburg 13 1/4 and Port Washington 10.

Midvale Senior Bill Housel was by far the top individual performer. The Blue Devil standout set new records in winning the high jump and pole vault while also winning the low hurdles and finishing second in the discus to Tusky Valley's Ben Price. His 6-foot leap in the high jump eclipsed a county record, which has stood since 1940. It was set by Floyd Blackwell of Tuscarawas. In establishing a new pole vault record Housel went over the bar at 10 feet, 10 1/2 inches, snapping his old mark set last year by one inch. He had gone 11 feet 2 inches in the Tornado Relays earlier this season. Midvale chalked up a 7-6 margin in firsts over Tusky Valley and 7-4 in seconds, while the Trojans led with a margin of 7-5 thirds. Chuck Locker led the Trojans as he took firsts in the shot put and broad jump, was a member of the winning 880-yard relay squad and took third in the 220-yard dash. The Trojans and Devils took every blue ribbon with the exception of the 220-yard dash, won by Strasburg's Bill Dreher.

Garaway's grade thinclads garnered four first spots to two for Tuscarawas en route to their victory. It's Bill Miller was the outstanding grade performer, winning the pole vault, 75-yard dash and was a member of Garaway's winning 440-yard relay squad. As a result of Saturday's action all county track titles for 1959 now rest at either Garaway or Midvale.

Garaway, in addition to its grade boys track victory also won the high school girls crown, while Midvale previously won the grade girls championship.
