Memorial Hall will be abandoned next year by the County Class "A" Basketball Tournament in favor of Dennison High School. The Dennison gymnasium was chosen in a unanimous move by county school heads yesterday morning over New Philadelphia's night fee charged at Dennison. The New Philadelphia Board of Education was asking $150 per night for rental of its new gym, twice as much as the $75 per night fee charged at Dennison. In considering a change of sites from Memorial Hall, which had been used the last 10 years, county heads decided that the New Philadelphia rate was too high, in view of the fact that only $110 per night is charged at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse. Before discussing rental fees, the new gym had been favored because of its centralized location. The county event was last held at Dennison in 1949. In announcing the move county Supt. W.E. Laws said that the main reason for the move from Memorial Hall was floor size which did not amply prepare schools for higher tourneys where games are played on floors much larger. The 1960 tourney will run February 19, 20, 26 and 27.

First year coach Tom Davies and Assistant Coach Mark Covert took control of a team that finished dead last in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League at 0-8 and won only one game during the entire season. Coach Davies began the season without a single Senior on the team. However, he did have a returning letterman who just might be the single best Freshman to ever have played at Port Washington High School in Bill Phillips in which to build a highly competative Purple Riders team. The 1958-1959 season began in November with a tough loss at Stone Creek 43-42 and looked to be a promising beginning for the team. They were destroyed in the second game and lost to Beach City 67-33. This loss made it clear that Port was once again having to rebuild in it's second straight season. This loss extended Port's losing streak over the past two seasons to 11 sraight losses and would continue the streak to 17 winless games until they beat Roscoe on December the 19th 64-60. The team was now 1-7 overall and 0-4 in league play, extending their league losses to 0-12 over the last two seasons. The team was to move on to a 3-17 record and extend the league losses to 16 straight. Sophomore Bill Phillips continued his record breaking pace and won a spot on the all-county listing. Juniors John Landon and Larry Hagan improved tremedously to pick up the slack and next year the Purple Riders are looking forward to a great season as the entire team will return.
*
HIGHLIGHT - Sophomore Bill Phillips made the Tuscarawas County Class "A" All-County Team. He amassed 394 points for the entire season. Port produces a 2-game winning streak with wins over non-league competition, Roscoe and Malvern.

59 - Midvale And Garaway Wins Tuscarawas County Class "A" Track Meet (5-11-59)

Midvale will pin its hope on a depth-laden team to repeat as Class "A" District Scholastic Track Champion Saturday at Bellaire. The Devils showed that depth last Saturday before 250 fans when they rolled to their third straight Tuscarawas County track title at Crater Stadium, amassing 91 points. Tusky Valley, which took its share of blue ribbons, but failed to come up with enough 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths, was the only other team in contention, totaling 81 points. From there the field dropped to 15 each compiled by Gnadenhutten and Strasburg, 13 by Port Washington, and 8 by Garaway. For the first year the grade boys went through a full slate of events, 13 in all, with Garaway emerging as king with 41 1/2 points to edge Tuscarawas with 40 3/4. Midvale was third with 35 1/4, Ragerville had 34 1/4, Gnaden 18 1/2, Strasburg 13 1/4 and Port Washington 10.
*
Midvale Senior Bill Housel was by far the top individual performer. The Blue Devil standout set new records in winning the high jump and pole vault while also winning the low hurdles and finishing second in the discus to Tusky Valley's Ben Price. His 6-foot leap in the high jump eclipsed a county record, which has stood since 1940. It was set by Floyd Blackwell of Tuscarawas. In establishing a new pole vault record Housel went over the bar at 10 feet, 10 1/2 inches, snapping his old mark set last year by one inch. He had gone 11 feet 2 inches in the Tornado Relays earlier this season. Midvale chalked up a 7-6 margin in firsts over Tusky Valley and 7-4 in seconds, while the Trojans led with a margin of 7-5 thirds. Chuck Locker led the Trojans as he took firsts in the shot put and broad jump, was a member of the winning 880-yard relay squad and took third in the 220-yard dash. The Trojans and Devils took every blue ribbon with the exception of the 220-yard dash, won by Strasburg's Bill Dreher.
*
Garaway's grade thinclads garnered four first spots to two for Tuscarawas en route to their victory. It's Bill Miller was the outstanding grade performer, winning the pole vault, 75-yard dash and was a member of Garaway's winning 440-yard relay squad. As a result of Saturday's action all county track titles for 1959 now rest at either Garaway or Midvale.
*
Garaway, in addition to its grade boys track victory also won the high school girls crown, while Midvale previously won the grade girls championship.

59 - Garaway Wins Dispute, Then Loses Playoff (5-9-59)
SUGARCREEK - It took just six pitches for West Lafayette to win the District Class "A" Scholastic Baseball Championship here Friday afternoon when the Generals and Garaway High School's Pirates resumed their playoff battle started Thursday.
*
Garaway hurler Charley Stingel fired a strike past opposing West Lafayette pictcher Ted Brown, the firt man up in the bottom of the seventh inning in a deadlocked 4-4 contest. But then he threw four straight balls and Brown was on first base. With Brown running, teammate Gene McElfresh bunted between Stingel and Garaway first baseman Dan Bleininger, Stingel fielded the ball, but threw over the head of teammate Bob Raber at first base, and before the ball could be returned from the outfield, Brown completed his circuit of the bases to tally the winning run in a 5-4 triumph.
*
West Lafayette, which left the scene of battle here Thursday afternoon thinking it had won the championship by a 4-3 margin, was called back early Friday afternoon on a ruling made by W.J. McConnell, Ohio High School Athletic Association Commissioner. McConnell entered the picture after Garaway had disputed an umpire's decision on a play arising in Garaway's 7th-inning turn at bat in Thursday's contest. The dispute came with West Lafayette leading 4-3 and Garaway at bat with runners on second and third with one out. Bleininger smashed a low, line drive to the West Lafayette shortstop. It appeared that he had trapped the baseball, but umpire Ed Smith of Strasburg ruled the catch as legal. Both Pirate runners were off at the crack of the bat with Raber scoring and Bud Yakley moving to third. When an attempt was made to nail Yakley at third, the ball went into the outfield and Yakley proceeded home with a run that would have given Garaway a 5-4 lead. However, both runners had failed to tag up after the legal catch and a hasty throw was made to second where Yakley was ruled the final out. Coaches Bill Ray and Jim Stull of Garaway questioned umpires following the game on whether Raber's scoring should be allowed since he reached home with the tying run before the third out was made at second base. Had the forceout been made at third, there would have been no dispute. The umpires agreed and the matter was referred to McConnell. Coaches and umpires involved in the dispute, along with County Supt.W.E. Laws, met in the latter's office yesterday morning to discuss the dispute via telephone with McConnell. The commissioner ruled that the run counted, but he questioned the time of appeal. He asked to talk with West Lafayette mentor Duke St. John, saying that if the General metor was willing to resume the game from the point of the disputed play it would do much to clear the situation. St. John was willing to go ahead - and today his West Lafayette charges have a clear-cut right to trophies originally presented following Thursday's contest.

59 - West Lafayette, Garaway Wait Final Decision (5-8-59)

SUGARCREEK - West Lafayette and Garaway baseball coaches today were awaiting the final word from Ohio High School Commissioner W. J. McConnell of whether their disputed Class "A" District Championship playoff battle yesterday will stand as is - or be continued. If it remains as the game was thought to have finished, West Lafayette's Generals will gain next week's Regional Tournament at North Canton. If it is ruled that it is to be continued, play will be resumed in the last half of the seventh inning with the score deadlocked 4-4.
*
The disputed call came in the top of the seventh inning yesterday with Garaway trailing 4-3. The Pirates had runners on second and third with one out when Dan Bleininger, Garaway first-baseman, smashed a low, line drive to the West Lafayette shortstop. It appeared that he had trapped the baseball, but umpire Ed Smith of Strasburg ruled the catch as legal. Both Pirate runners were off at the crack of the bat with Bob Raber scoring and Bud Yakley moving to third. When an attempt was made to nail Yakley at third, the ball went into the outfield and Yakley proceded home with the run that would have put Garaway into a 5-4 lead. However, both runners had failed to tag up after the legal catch and a hasty throw was made to second where Yakley was ruled the final out. The game ended with West Lafayette ahead 4-3 and the Generals left for home supposedly District Champion.
*
Coaches Jim Stull and Bill Ray of Garaway, following the game, questioned umpires on whether Rabers's scoring should be allowed since he reached home with the tying run before the third out was made at second base. Had the force out been made at third, there would have been no dispute. Umpires Smith and Frank Burrier of Baltic agreed - and today's discussion with McConnell was in order. County Supt. W.E. Laws said this morning that, in all probability, the game would be resumed at the point of the dispute. The continuation date would be set during this morning's discussion.

59 - Garaway Set For District Final, Wins 5-4 (5-6-59)
SUGARCREEK - Garaway's Pirates rallied in the bottom half of the eighth inning yesterday to defeat Warsaw 4-3 and advance to the Class "A" District finale here at Community Park this afternoon. The Pirates will clash with West Lafayette for the title and the coveted trip to the Regional Tournament at North Canton's Hoover Stadium next week. Coach Bill Hay's Buccos, runner-ups to already-eliminated Tuscarawas in the Tuscarawas County tourney chase, capitalized on a Warsaw weakness for bunts to secure the triumph. Russ Kohler led off the 8th with a single. Bob Raber struck out, but Kohler advanced on a steal. He reached third on a fielder's choice which also permitted Steve Gray to gain first base and then scored on a perfect squeeze bunt by Bud Yakley. Junior righthander Charley Stingel limited the Coshocton Countians to only three hits, but had control trouble, walking nine. He struck out eight. Warsaw's big inning was the second, when Stingel walked three and was touched for one hit, permitting three runs. Tarrah went the distance for the losers, permitting 8 hits, fanning 10 and walking only four. His mates made 6 errors.

59 - 3rd Time In Less Than A Year Strasburg After New Coach (5-1-59)
*
Ernest Raber, who took over the cage duties last Fall, today announced his resignation effective at the close of the current school term. He cited "public overemphasis on winning" as his reasons for resigning. During the past season, Strasburg posted a 6-13 overall record including a 2-6 mark in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League. The Tigers lost to Stone Creek 57-41 in the county tournament opener.
*
Raber, a native of Sugarcreek, also served as baseball coach and taught history and physical education. Prior to taking the Strasburg position, the 32-year-old Raber had served as basketball coach at Springfield Local High School near Toledo and two years at Lexington High near Mansfield. At Lexington, his teams were county champion and runner-up. His baseball squad won county titles during the two seasons. He also coached one year at Winterhaven, Florida. A graduate of Bowling Green University where he was a varsity cager. Raber has no plans for the immediate future. "I would like to leave coaching or remain in it on a Junior High level." he said in announcing his resignation. He also said he would like to advance into the school administration field.
*
Raber succeeded Ed McGlumphy last Fall. McGlumphy, who was named to the position a year ago while he was at Stone Creek, resigned the post before he took over to return to Martins Ferry, his alma mater. McGlumphy would have succeeded Charles Caniford, Strasburg High School principal.

Malvern and West Lafayette meet Monday at 1.
*
Tom Romano hurled the Malvern victory, permitting one hit, a double by Chuck McCahill in the second inning. He fanned 14 and walked only three. Charged with the loss was Tusky's Dick Robinson. Two games were slated to open the Class "A" Sectional Baseball Tournament at Sugarcreek's Community Park today, but because of last night's rains it has been indicated by the county office that the openers will be moved back until Wednesday. Clashing in the opening contest at 1PM will be Malvern and Tuscarawas, Tuscarawas County runnerup, while Hiland and West Lafayette will battle in the second test at 3. Big Prairie-Lakeville and Warsaw will meet in the only game slated for Thursday at 3. Tuscarawas County Champion Garaway, which drew a bye, will meet the Big Prairie-Warsaw victor Monday at 3, while the winner of the Malvern-Tusky game and victor of the Hiland-West Lafayette contest meet at 1. The tournament finals have been set for Thursday, May 7, at 3PM, with the winner gaining the Regional Tournament at North Canton. Gnadenhutten was the defending Sectional and Regional champ. Drawings for the Sectional tournament were held yesterday in the office of County Superintendent W. E. Laws.

Coach Bill Ray's Pirates were behind 7-5 going into the last frame when they exploded for three runs and the victory. Larry Yakley led off the big inning with a walk and Koran Zehnder advanced him to third on a single. Pitcher Charles Stingel drilled a double to left scoring Yakley and Zehnder and tieing the game. But a Garaway victory was still not assured. Tom Andrews struck out and Bob Raber flied to left. Russell Kohler dribbled a slow roller to Tuscasrawas shortstop Gary Caviness. Stingel was off with crack of the bat and Kohler beat out the hit with Stingel scoring the winning run. In his winning mound performance, Stingel whiffed seven and walked five, while loser Dick Robinson struck out eight and walked only three.
