61 - Tusky Valley's Defense Stops Baltic 62-53 (1-21-61)


BOLIVAR - Tuscarawas Valley (4-1) (8-3) Coach Robert Heller considered the defensive performance of Rod Cropper as one of the big keys in the victory over Baltic (3-2) (8-7).  Cropper limited the Eagles' high scoring Larry Lautenschleger to 10 points and only one goal in the second half.  Baltic which pressed the Trojans saw its ace foul out of the game with 7 minutes remaining to play.  Charles McPherson followed at the 3 minute mark and with less than 2 minutes to play Rube Mullet and Gary Mast picked up their fifth personals.  Mike Widder led the Trojan triumph with 19 points.  Al Cerett connected for 14 and Jim Studer 11.  Larry Oswald led the Eagles with 14 points.  Dick Gerber and Lautenschleger collected 10 apiece.  Tusky Valley connected 21 times in 62 tries from the field for 34 percent, while Baltic enjoyed a top night by making 19 of 44 for 43 percent.  The Trojans meshed 20 of 32 free throw tries and Baltic 15 of 26.  The Tusky Valley Reserves (5-5) whipped the Baltic Reserves (8-6) 29-20 and the Tusky Valley Junior High team beat back the Baltic Junior High 54-36.  Tuscarawas Valley picked up a loss against the Dennison Railroaders on January 10 and the results were not available due to the January 11 issue missing.
