PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington's Purple Riders (5-5) will ride high today following its rousing and sparkling upset of the Midvale Blue Devils (6-3), in a thriller at the new Port Gym last night.  A minor dispute marred the otherwise nip-and-tuck thriller; however, as a tip-in by Midvale's Mike Page was ruled void.  Trailing 60-59 with about 20 seconds to go, Midvale worked the ball for a final shot.  Forward Neal Beans tried one from the corner with approximately four seconds left as it rimmed and popped out.  Page quickly rebounded it and tipped it through for what Midvale fans believed was the winning bucket.  The buzzer had sounded somewhere along the line however and the officials said they didn't even see the tip, which had already been recorded on the scoreboard and in the scorebook.  A pair of foul tosses by Gary Gay with but 22 seconds remaining to play gave Port the victory after it had held the upper hand most of the way.  Midvale fought back from a 49-41 third-period deficit to take a 59-58 lead until Gay's tosses decided the issue.  The Blue Devils had one scoring  opportunity before the end of the game, but couldn't connect.  The win also marked the end of an eight game losing streak for Port Washington at the hands of the Blue Devils since the 1956-1957 season.  With Jim Hannahs and Tony Nigro in the lead roles, Port captured 37 rebounds to Midvale's 30.  Bill Phillips paced the Port attack with 22 points, while Jim Bender contributed 13  Midvale had 4 men in double figures--Neal Beans with 16, Bob Byers and Rich Belknap with 12 each and Warren Leggett with 10.  The Midvale Reserves (6-3) pitch-forked the Port Washington Reserves (2-5) 46-37 in the first game of the night.
