61 - Stone Creek Looses Larry Stephon In Loss To Tusky 58-49 (1-30-61)


STONE CREEK - A 58-49 loss to Tuscarawas (9-6) here Saturday night proved more costly for Stone Creek (5-13) than it bargained for.  Ace rebounder Larry Stephon, who is pulling down an average of 15 per game, suffered a sprained ankle.  X-rays at Union Hospital it was revealed he had also suffered torn ligaments.  He will be on the sidelines for at least 2 weeks.  Coach Ken Lawhun of the Panthers hopes Stephon will be ready for the upcoming Tuscarawas County  Class "A" Tournament.  It proved to be a bad night all around for Stephon.  He was tagged with his fourth personal foul in the first period, sitting  out a portion of it and most of the second quarter.  He suffered the bad ankle sprain early in the fourth quarter.  Tuscarawas had 3 players in double figures.  Phil Meese led the way with 13 points, while Vic Vesco and Ben Metzger tallied 10 apiece.  Gale Sauser, Stone Creek's point-making ace, took game laurels with 21.  The Broncos made 22 of 69 shots from the field for 31 percent and hit on 14 of 27 charity tosses.  Stone  Creek connected on 15 of 54 field tries for 27 percent.  It added 19 of 28 from the foul line.  The Stone Creek Junior High team started off the night licking the Tusky Junior High team 36-32.  This  was followed by another Stone Creek victory as the Stone Creek Reserves (4-13) won their 3rd straight game by whipping the Tusky Reserves (8-6) 33-27.
