PORT WASHINGTON - Paying no heed to press clippings, Port Washington's Purple Riders (1-2) (4-5) gave their up county foes from Garaway (2-0) (8-2) almost more than it bargained for.  It was a nip-and-tuck battle from the  opening minutes and; although, the Pirates were never behind, the score was knotted several times.  The Pirates gained the nod at the foul line when they potted 12 of 18 free chances as compared to Port's 7 of 10.  Port had one more bucket than the invaders from action, 21 to 20.  Port also held the advantage in rebounds 28-27.  But 13 personals were whistled against the hosts as compared to 9 against the Bucs.  Jim Bender tallied 20 points and Bill Phillips 17 to lead the Riders, while Tom Andreas led the Pirates with 14.  Bob Raber had 13 and Jarrett Gray 11.  No Reserve game was reported by The Daily Reporter or The Times Reporter.
