Midvale's Blue Devils are full of surprises this year. After handing Sugarcreek-Shanesville its first league defeat early this month, they dropped off badly and were nearly eliminated from the County Class B league race when Port Washington forced them into an overtime to win. The chief eye-opener of them all; however, was their stunning triumph over Dennison Tuesday night. The main cog in the Blue Devil's machine has been their 6-4 center Bob Sherrell. Last week Sherrell was riding along in fourth position in the county league scoring race with 98 markers but he seared into the honor seat in this week's poll with 133 points by virtue of his all-time high of 35 points scored against Baltic last Friday night. That 35-point spluge gave the pivot slot artist a 19 point lead over his nearest rival, Gene McPherson of Stone Creek. McPherson's total remained unchanged at 114 since the Panthers of Coach Ken Newlon were idle in last Friday night's league skirmishes. Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Ike Hostetler increased his total to 112 but probably would have tallied more in the Pirates' tussle with Mineral City had Coach Gerald Straley left his charges build up a huge margin over the Tigers.
