Port Washington Surprises 48-47 (2-4-50)

It was Port Washington's Bob Frank who brought the Panthers' victory march to an abrupt halt as he rimmed a field goal from mid-court to ice the fray with only 30 seconds remaining in the extra period. Previous to last night's action, the Bengals had loomed in the spotlight by eliminating Sugarcreek-Shanesville from the county Class B League race. They also went into the tilt last night on the crest of a 13-game winning streak. Jim Pfeiffer meshed a side shot and Harold Ridenour rimmed a free throw to put the Panthers in front 47-44 with a minute and a half remaining in the extra period. But the Riders' Allen Corbelt then came through with a two-pointer to set the stage for Frank's game-winning basket. After leading 16-10 at the close of the first pleriod and 29-20 at the half, Coach Bray Toot's charges fell off the pace in the third frame when the Panthers switched from a man-to-man to a zone defense and surged ahead 37-34 going into the last quarter of the regulation game. Playing nip and tuck ball in the early minutes of the fourth pleriod, both teams posted 42 markers at the automatic time-out. Stone Creek again forged into the lead, but the winners' Bob Jones hit a side shot to knot the count at 44-all with 45 seconds showing on the timer's clock. From there on to the finish both clubs missed several easy shots, as the regulation game finished in deadlock. Jones poured 20 markers through the hoop to lead the Riders (4-9) attack while Jim Pfeiffer and Harold Ridenour tallied 19 and 12 points respectively for the losers. The Port Washington reserves also edged the Bengal seconds 32-29.

There also was a photo taken that is too dark to reproduce and the caption reads as follows: PANTHERS UPSET. Stone Creek's Panthers, victorious in 13 straight games, saw their streak end last night as the Port Washington Purple Riders paced by Harold Weber (6) tripped the Creekers 48-47. Harold Ridenour (4) and Gene McPherson (8) of Stone Creek could not halt Jone's field goal attempt.
