Strasburg Strolls To County Crown 64-46 (2-11-56)

The Strasburg-Port Washington fracas at the Strasburg gym was just about like many other games involving the Tigers this season. The Blazing Bengals (10-0) (17-0) coached by Ken Newlon jumped out front quickly and were pretty much the boss all the way as the Purple Riders (6-4) (12-6) experienced difficulty in matching Strasburg's all-around play. Achieving their 41st consecutive league victory and their 16th triumph of the season the Tigers displayed plenty of balance. They were coasting in the second half despite the fact that their top point-producer, Jim Kuecher performed for only a few minutes. Kuecher suffered a sprained ankle during the second quarter, but the injury was diagnosed as a slight one and the curly-topped forward is expected to be in fine shape for the upcoming county dribble derby. With Kuecher hampered by the ankle, Guard Jerry Froman was Strasburg's high scorer as he tallied 20 markers followed by Willie Rieger with 13. Kuecher had 10. Froman, Rieger and Center Ron Gray controlled the boards in the team victory which sent Port down to its sixth loss in 18 tries. Port's six game winning streak was also snapped. High man for the night was Port forward Ed Bates who found the range for 21 points. But no other member of the visiting team was able to tally in double figures. Ed Bates got 13 of his total in the last round. The Orange led 16-7 after one quarter and increased their margin steadily. It was 36-20 at the half and 50-27 going into the final session. The Strasburg Reserves did not fair as well as they were roped for a 41-35 loss by the Port Washington Reserves (14-3). This was one of the very best years for the Port Washington Reserves. The Port Washington Grades (5-2) gunned down the Strasburg graders 45-27.
