67 - Gnaden Shaves Keystone 1-0 (5-19-67)

NORTH CANTON - Bill Kohl (7-0) pitched the Gnadenhutten Indians (9-1) into the Regional finals yesterday with a brilliant one-hit performance; although, it took 2 extra innings to decide the 1-0 decision over the Keystone Wildcats.  Kohl fanned 12 of the first 15 batters to face him and had a perfect game until the 7th inning when Scott Carmen ledoff with the only walk given up by Kohl.  Steve Kincannon then laid down a perfect bunt for the only hit.  With 2 men on, the Indians then settled down and a forceout, a strikeout and a Dan Jink's rifle throw to 3rd, nipped an attempted steal to end the Wildcat threat.  Bob Renninger found himself in trouble in the 2nd inning when the Indians loaded the bases, but Steve Moore's strikeout ended the inning.  In the 3rd frame, Jinks singled (3) and a walk gave the Indians 2 men on, but Renninger rose to the cause and got out of the jam.  The Indians again loaded the bases in the 6th inning, but Ken Huprich ended the threat by grounding out.

The Indians got their winning run in their half of the 8th when Jinks got a base on balls and Mike Kail, attempting to sacrifice Jinks to 2nd, laid down a bunt (6) and beat the throw by the pitcher with a head-on slide.  Wayne Martin then stepped to the plate and bunted to the pitcher who threw to Jerry Fisher, 2nd baseman, who was covering first.  Fisher dropped the ball when lhe collided with Martin and Jinks, playing heads-up ball, never stopped as he rounded 3rd and came home to score the winning run.  Kohl ended  with 16 strikeouts to his credit, while Renninger who fanned 13, was in trouble on several occasions because of the 7 walks he gave up.  Jinks, Kail and Don Finnicum (3) were the only Indians to get hits off the losing hurler.

Gnadenhutten will now take on Leavittsburg who shutout River Local 6-0 on a 5-hit performance by Bill Davies in the 1st game of the program.  Today's contest begins at 2PM.  The opener was decided in the 5th inning when Leavittsburg collected 5 runs on 6 hits, including 2 doubles.  The victors also came up with an insurance run in the 6th inning.
