67 - Down The Line With Ed Smith
DOVER - If we had all the flying rumors about next year's coaching jobs on a pile, this desk undoubtedly would collapse. Coaches are the last ones to volunteer their own job contemplations, but are always willing to say, "did you hear about so-and-so" or "Coach Blank is going here or there!" The Indian Valley situation is the most talked-about and Coach Burt Beaber's move to Newcomerstown and Don Dupper's move to Columbus are the only official statements coming from the District. At Midvale, Head Coach Pete Hilliard says he will definitely "stick around" and rumors are that he will be head basketball mentor for Indian Valley North...Lyle Matlick of Tuscarawas High School is reportedly in line for the same berth at South. Also at Tuscarawas, Coach Dick Ronald reportedly will toss aside football duties to become a Junior High Principal at Indian Valley South...Gnadenhutten's basketball mentor, Jim Lower, is reported to have a job lined up at Western Reserve and Ted Martin, baseball tutor there, says he is just thinking "along several lines."
Port Washington's Joe Lopez will admit to looking around, but with tongue in cheek, says nothing is for certain. The same goes for Oren Thompson, assistant at Midvale and several others. Rumors from Strasburg and Garaway also had Charlie Huggins and Glenn Bower weighing some offers, but each squelched those reports in a hurry. In tapping the rumor wire, we also heard that Jim Antonelli will leave the basketball post at Dover St. Joseph's to take a teaching position in the Columbus school system. But, at the moment, he also is mum. Where these reports originate can only be wild guesses, but, the deadline for signing 1967-68 contracts is nearing, so perhaps it won't be long before the air will be cleared. Meanwhile, the rumors are merely fodder for conversation.
