Right Down The Line (1-8-57)
Two of the top three teams in the Class A County Basketball League have a player who has averaged above 20 points thus far this season, while the only other two cagers who have hit over 20 points per game are from also-ran quintets, according to our unofficial records. Ed Bates of Port Washington, which has a 2-2 record in the loop, is the top scorer with 263 points in 11 games for a 23.9 average. Ron Deibel of Stone Creek, who has scored 274 in 12 games for a 22.8 average, and Jerry Froman of Strasburg, who has scored 202 in 10 games, follow Ed Bates. Stone Creek and Strasburg are both undefeated in league action. Bill Slemmer of Dundee, which hasn't won but one game in 10 starts, is fourth with 200 points and 20 markers per game. Merle Clum, 6-4 sophomore of Sugarcreek, is fifth with 19 points per game on a 209 total in 11 games. From here on down the players are well mixed with every team having at least two players scoring over 10 points. Baltic, who started the season off with a loss and then rolled over five foes before hitting the skids to post a 7-4 record thus far, has five players scoring in double figures with two of them just over the 16 point mark. Gnadenhutten has four with Eldon Miller being tops with 18.3 per game, while Strasburg also has four. A most unusual thing has occurred on the Tiger squad as three players have averaged 10.6 points on a 106 total in 10 games. Tuscarawas Valley has three men in double figures with Ben Price leading the trio with an 18.1 per game on 163 points in nine games, while Port Washington also has three in the double diget column with Ed Bates being tops. Stone Creek, Dundee, Sugarcreek, Midvale and Tuscarawas all have two players averaging over 10 points per game.
